I don't think Lafreniere is a fit here unless he can move to center. He would suffer similar problems to what he does in New York. Too many left-handed forwards, and he would be stuck behind a franchise left winger. Call it the Debrincat syndrome.
Teams can only have so many 7M-8M players. Wasting another slot on a gaudy player who we don't need was the kind of move we made twice under Dorion, first with Debrincat, then with Chychrun.
With that said, if you approach the trade from the perspective that they think the should of Norris will be a major issue going forward, and the trade is a trojan horse to dump the contract - it's understandable. Swap Norris for Lafreniere, and figure out how to balance the lineup later.
The reason Lafreniere made sense as a piece in a package for Tkachuk, in the scenario that we were a basement team again and they had reason to believe Tkachuk would want out after his NMC activated, would have been because it's a LW for LW. With Tkachuk out, Lafreniere would have been in a position the be the #1 winger. With Tkachuk here, it doesn't make much sense.
With all that said, I don't think Lafreniere for Norris is that crazy when you consider Lafreniere's costly extension and his play so far this season after signing it. It would be the definition of a change of scenery trade.
