I think it would be a good shake up for us, except it's going to be difficult to convince Erik to wear an E.Karlsson nameplate after we trade Brady to Vegas for William Karlsson, Zach Whitecloud, and a condition 2028 2nd Round pick.

I love EK, but we can't shake up the chemistry in our top 4 for Karlsson, and not unless he's half retained.

the time when Norris would have been potentially available was when there were maximum questions about his shoulder, i would not do this trade now and im still a huge fan of karlsson
karlsson at 50% bottom 6 pieces not named pinto could work but pittsburgh would be stupid to take that

Ignoring all the obvious reasons why it doesn't make sense (cap, baggage with him being the former captain, etc), I think this could actually be the best time for him to play in Ottawa.
Imagine a setup where EK gets to be sheltered here because we already have a top 4. Basically, he could be Erik Wideman. All o-zone starts against soft deployment. Kleven on the bottom pair with him. He could still play 18+ minutes a game because there will times when we might want him up with Sanderson or Chabot to try and get our offense going. But he wouldn't be used as a 22-24 minute guy who is forced to carry one of the top pairings and play defense.
Look at how he was used in San Jose when they tried to pump up his numbers for a trade. Something like that, but with less minutes.
As far as Yak goes, Karlsson has 2 years left on his contract after this season. That's a nice buffer to take Yak along slowly and not rush his development. Yak could come in next year, but he also probably could have come in this year. They clearly want to take him slowly.
For whatever reason EK has never played to his potential when he wasn't counted on to be "the guy".
Whenever he's had to split opportunities with other talented offensive D he's been a disappointment.
Don't think he'd perform well playing a 3rd pairing RD role. Nor should we consider paying him big money to play in that spot.
Unless Pittsburgh trades him at half retention, and then another team trades him at another half retention, it won't work for us. We're too near the cap and can't afford EK unless he's at an absurdly low cap hit.
Having said that, if he wants to sign here at league minimum after we have a cup or two and his contract ends, sure

I used to want him back just to spite the previous regime and their shenanigan's, but at this point, it's time for this team to forge their own path. There's no spot for him that makes sense at his salary, even with a ton of retention.

He can move back to his house in the Glebe when he retires if he really wants to. Or sign a Spezza with the Leafs deal to end his career.

Yup. One of my favourite players of all-time but he does not fit with the current roster. I mean if he was at a cap hit of $3M or less, sure, but that's not the case.
Our top 4 is looking pretty damn good lately and there is no reason to disrupt that. What we need is some cheap depth and/or an affordable upgrade on our bottom pair.

Ya that salary just makes it not work, flat out. No way around it. A PP specialist on the right isn't the worst idea in the world, but not at any sort of significant cost.

Montreal is a world class city. Karlsson enjoys the finer things in life and Montreal delivers those things beautifully, in a way that few cities in North America do. I could see Karlsson loving the lifestyle there, and he has the disposition & style to become a fan favourite.
I could absolutely see it.

Idk, are we operating on the premise that Karlsson is ready to give up on his stanley cup dreams?
He's 34, and Mtl is currently the worst team in the league. It's one thing to move to a team that's ready for the next step but not quite there at that age, but I can't see him jumping on that boat without more of a carrot, he's got his entire life to enjoy the finer things of life, he can do that during the offseason to his hearts content, he can do it while on the road, right now, two things likely matter to him, winning and family. If his wife is hyped about Mtl, sure, maybe there's a chance, but overall it seems unlikely to me.
Not sure why Montreal would be interested in a 34 year old Karlsson.
They are a young rebuilding team and already have their undersized PP QB in Hutson.
Plus they have Matheson, who has developed into an excellent offensive D. Been a 60P/82GP guy for the Habs since they acquired him.
Honestly I struggle to see a fit for EK anywhere in the league right now. Pens are probably stuck with him.

There arent many teams who would or could acquire him and his hopes in Pittsburgh are even bleaker.
If Karlsson could pick his location your argument would carry lots of water but he is not a piece I see many teams scrambling to add at this point. Montreal is one of a small handful who could actually get much out of him without totally rearranging the deck
Matheson will be moved for real value and Karlsson will cost very, very little. Theres also some value in throwing a colleague a bit of a bone, especially if you can do so while benefitting your team as well
I was thinking a team like NYI could try acquiring him. Lou loves his aging/declining vets while stunting the development of younger guys and EK would fit in perfectly there lol
