I wonder if Brock Boeser RW will hit the open market & what the Sens could do to entice him to Ott? My guess is that he will stay in Van or go down south to play for the highest bidder. He would be a very interesting Trade Deadline acquisition although Van will likely be a playoff team & be a buyer rather than trade anyone off there roster especially him.
See below at the bottom of this post
I'd love to sign him in the offseason, but money may be tight if we're also re-signing Giroux.
Yep, agreed.
Can we afford ehlers in the open market?
There was a thread for next years roster and cap. I guess people didn’t look at it. Likely not as much cap space as some are anticipating.

Giroux should come in around $3 million per year for 2 years if he wants to stay.
Age is going to catch up to him at some point.
Doesn't look like it is going to be this year (knock on wood).

As someone was saying on these boards, it is almost like he picks his spots and knows when to expend energy and when to reserve that energy.
That was maybe a reason behind him falling off in production in the back half of last season. He knew the season was lost.
The way he thinks the game is going to keep him in the league as long as his body holds out.

With that being said, he is likely going to play out this season and then make a decision on his future.
This team making the playoffs this year will go a very long way in that decision to stay or to retire or go elsewhere for a shot at a Cup.
Let's assume that the playoff happens (bang head on wood) and then I think we are looking at a 2-year extension right around $4.5 to $5m/season.

im hopeful that giroux would rather an even better chance at a cup, than an extra 2 m after 90 mill in career earnings.

half that is still multi generational wealth.

Dont think the cap with be there for more then $3.75

I’ll say he does

2 x $3.75

They can make extra room for Giroux by using paper performance bonuses that are easy for him to reach and could roll over to the next season.

For example, Pavelski signed at 5.5M but 2M was in performance bonuses awarded at 10gp and 30gp. Unless Giroux slows down, I could see something like that.

Granted, we overpaid Perron because we aren't a top destination, he got 2 years at 4M AAV and he is not the player Giroux is. Giroux at 3.75M is very unlikely unless he takes a haircut to help the team.

I’m hoping Giroux wants to stay, he’s not taking a big haircut when still producing.
He is already somewhat underpaid.

Performance bonuses just hurt a year later, and hurt improving team that year. Especially easy ones.

That’s a different story from wanting a better chance at winning a Cup.

If that really mattered to him, he’d play elsewhere, not drop a couple million back in cap savings to Ottawa.
I'll preface this with I think people are crazy thinking Giroux will sign for anything less than 5 mil, but...

I think the idea he was trying to convey is that he can stay here and not uproot his family, and by taking 3 mil instead of 5 or whatever, he also gives himself and the team a better chance at the cup so he's hoping Giroux will take a home town discount is all rather than push for as much as he can get from us specifically.

No I get the rationale, but he signed for market value when he came originally.

If he produces like a top six forward, I don’t see him taking 3rd line dollars to do the team any favours.

If he produces like a bottom six forward, we will still have a hole to fill even if we do sign him.

I see a lot of wishful thinking here.

I think the only way we get a team friendly deal is by giving him an extra year. He won't (likely) be a pt per game player at 39/40 years old, so a three year deal might come in a bit lower than a 2 year deal. I still think 5 mil is probably the best case scenario, he could choose to go year to year and probably get 6 mil until his play drops off.

Yes, but cap as an asset is dynamic in value.

Meaning, if the Senators view that they will have a surplus of cap in 26-27, or at least more cap, they might value using it by proxy to raise what they can spend in 2025-2026 via paper performance bonuses that will roll over.

I'm not suggesting they will see it that way, I am only pointing out that it is a legitimate option.

Agreed.

There's a certain Alfie quality to him though. He might still be worth the gamble.
Alfredsson had 71 pts in 70 games as a 36 year old (same age as Giroux now)

He dropped down to .57 pts/g, .78pts/g, .55pts/g and .72pts/game in his final 4 years, so a significant drop off even in the high years.

Alfie was still a very good player to have around at age 37-40. I expect similar from Giroux, and hope he'll finish his career here.

True, but league scoring was also a bit lower than it is now. His PPG season is a bit more impressive in that regard.

He uses his hockey smarts so well that you think he might be able to extend his competitive window more so than a lot of players.

Sure, but it's the progression that's important. Both start off at about a pt per game, whether league scoring is only matters if it's changing (though so far this year it is a bit higher than last).

3 years is risky at his age, even for a great player.

At 3 years, I would expect a fairly substantial discount because both the second and third years could be buyout or LTIR candidates. (Assuming it meets the criteria for a buyout.)

2 years is risky, let alone 3. I could see a 3 year deal making sense if the logic is that nobody expects him to play in year 3, but there is still risk to the Senators because they can't force him on LTIR if he still wants to play and isn't very effective. The logic being similar to a performance bonus deal, where they sell off future cap space for cap space now.

If he finishes the season with 65+ points and plays a key role, 5M is probably the floor on a 1 or 2 year deal, with 6.5M being the ceiling. Add in a risky third year and maybe that drops by 1M or more.

Of course, the above assumes we are still his preferred destination and he doesn't go hard negotiating with us.
