Travis Green and the coaches need to work with the D on what to do when hemmed in. Too many soft pucks up the middle getting turned over.

The D need to be stronger and rip pucks off the glass and out. I remember Chris Phillips being so smooth with this: he could back hand pucks off the glass high in the air out to neutral zone safety. Get on this Travis!
I think the opposite. Have a plan that actually gets you out of the zone without icing it. Of course there are extreme circumstances where smashing it out is the best option but not always

Would it be a good idea to trade for a RD if the Zub injury turns out to be a concern throughout the season.
Staios must be considering all his options right now even if Zub is going to return soon.
Third pair is decent right now with Kleven & JBD but yeah, you can only go so far with Hamonic on your top pairing with Sanderson.

I am higher on Hamonic than most from what I read on these boards but for this team to be considering playoffs, he should be our 6/7, playing around 15 minutes per game when he is in and being a solid mentor to Kleven & JBD.

Time to put in a call to Shattenkirk.

I don’t there are moves to be made for a good RD at thhis point. Who’s offering one?

Maybe Washington is willing to unload TVR if they want to extend Chychrun.

Is there any reason to believe Zub won't be back and healthy soon, though? As soon as he is, Hamonic will slot back into a third RHD rotation with JBD and we'll be fine.

If we're in the hunt at the trade deadline, I think that is when you start looking to add more depth. Unless of course a top four guy goes down with something major.

San Jose just aquired Liljegren. We can probably snag Jan Rutta for a 3rd or 4th rounder. He's an upgrade but not an ideal one.

Unquestionably because we are not making playoffs with Hamonic there in top pairing.

PuckPedia says he’s back on Nov.1. Not sure how they know, and maybe they are guessing.

We have about $1.95 m of cap space. If Zub goes on LTIR, then we’ll have more cap space. But, when Zub is healthy and returns, then they could end up having to make another move i.e., cut some one.

Rutta has a $2.75 m cap hit.

Damn details.

if seattle wants to make room for fleury on defense or starts to falter i want to try and get Borgen and they have retention slots available

besides that we have the usual target of Fabbro and Murphy. I think if we get a dman we get someone with 1 year left to ensure limited weirdness for Yak next year

Hamonic has a NMC (can’t be traded, placed on waivers or sent to the AHL) In my mind, the question to ask is when will Zub return. Zub will go back to the top pair with Sanderson and JBD will be on the 3rd pair with Kleven. Hamonic will be used sparingly you’d think and then perhaps another whipping post to pile on to will have to be found I suppose. LOL.

I'd bet that they would want a 2nd for Ceci or Rutta right now. They can always get a 3rd or 4th at the deadline with the benefit of using them until then to eat up minutes.

Celebrini is hurt right now, but I don't think they want to be a team who gets shelled every night. They have Celebrini, Smith, and a few other young stars to form a core. They need to start learning how to be competitive at an NHL level.

If they like JBD and he goes the other way, maybe that changes the dynamic because they are getting a young top 6 defenseman to replace Rutta, but if we are trading to replace holes caused by injuries, including JBD seems unlikely.

Hamonic sitting over JBD? Not sure that is in the cards of Green

thats the biggest immediate test for Green, benching Hamonic. i will gladly find another person to blame lol

We know what hamonic is, we have seen how kleven plays with and without him and we have seen him make a significant negative impact to sandersons game since the zub injury. Im sure he is a great person and a great locker room guy but at some point winning games has to be the full priority. JBD isnt amazing but in the few games he has played he has shown enough to take that #6 slot.

We do have other spots on the team that can be improved but an issue on the defense will always be a bigger problem then an issue with forwards

You have to understand the context of what I was saying. My suggestion was that a 2nd is an overpayment, but it would take an overpayment to get one of them this early in the season.

The other poster said Rutta for a 3rd or 4th.

They are going to get that for Ceci and/or Rutta at the trade deadline so there is no point in moving either now when they need NHL veterans to eat minutes for them. They would need an overpayment.

Is there a universe out there where JBD looks good on the top pair?

We exist in the universe where that happened to Demelo after he failed to stick as the 6/7 in San Jose at a similar point in his development to JBD, so from a mathematical POV I'm going to say that won't happen twice.

We have seen guys go from JBDs position to bring stars but it is exceedingly rare. Forsling, Demelo, etc.

I get the impression that JBD is not on Green's good list. He had the most experience and also a 1-way contract, so he was at an advantage to make the team, but he is only now factoring in because of injuries.

Last I looked (Wednesday), we had about $1.95 m of cap space. Rutta has a $2.75 m cap hit.

That cap space was likely with multiple bodies papered down to the AHL. With a 23 player roster, we have about 366k.

They could potentially put Pinto and Zub on LTIR, with a backup plan of using a 21 player roster if they don't have a player to put on LTIR when both return and they might just have enough to fit in a player like Rutta.

It's a moot point though, because I don't think many defensemen who we'd actually want will be available right now for anything other than an overpayment. Look at the Liljegren return and how Leafs fans portrayed him as a negative value asset. They were surprised he got back he he did.
