I'd never seen Zub play. I'd watched video and heard Button talk about him. Based on that, thought he might be something. But nobody here was talking him up.

There was a very limited camp because of COVID and he couldn't speak English. It certainly wasn't a case of having an extended look at him or even being able to talk to him.

I'm not surprised they were slow to put him in. He certainly wasn't the first time a coach's hand was forced and then it turns out they really lucked into something.

Why weren't you surprised. He was literally one of our best players and it was evident from his first game and these guys waited until the season was basically out of reach to put him in.

I think they were forced too because of injury.

Inexcusable. How can someone coach or GM at this level and run the team like that.

The more important question is how many that you would take over him are realistically available, because no team is going to let go of a top 4 D on a good contract.
I'm not suggesting guys are available, just highlighting who is in the salary neighborhood

I think we can all agree Chabot is overpaid for his current contribution. Ideally everyone is on a good contract, but it almost never works out that way, you need to take a risk to get guys on bargain deals.

What matters more to me is the overall team, not whether an individual is over or underpaid. My question is can Chabot fill the role of 2nd pair offensive D, and if not can we acquire a replacement.

I agree with you that he needs to cut down on the brainfart plays. If Green can get those out of his system, or minimize them, I think he's great depth even if a bit overpaid, provided he can stay healthy. If he can't, I see us moving on from him after this contract.

I liked his game against Utah, he was doing the things defensively he's not known for. Maybe this is the year he turns the corner.

The only injury we had on D when Zub played his first game was to Wolainin.

Chabot was a late scratch for the game that became Zub's debut. That's what allowed the team to activate him off the taxi squad.

People like to make it sound like DJ Smith was an idiot for not dressing Zub, but he literally couldn't use him. He wasn't on the active roster and there was no space to activate him.

A few days later the team waived Braydon Cobrun to a make room for Zub full-time. He never came out again other than for COVID protocol.

My bad, I checked the injury data and wasn't listed as injured until the next game, I guess they only official deemed him injured the next game but clearly he wasn't in that game so likely already hurt.

That said, a choice was made for who to put on the taxi squad in the first place, presumably the coach had input into that. I think it's a bit of a cop out to say he couldn't use him, they made the decision to have someone else (Coburn, Wolainin, Paquette, Galchenyuk, Anisimov...) on the main roster over him.

I have a feeling if the team falters any further in the next few games this new management won't hesitate to make a significant trade to change culture around here and I don't mean fringe player.

Falters any farther? Like losing 2 in a row?

Barn burners are not good hockey ,not being able to close out when leading is not a good team.

No way we should trade Greig.

Greig is one of the few players who doesn't have to be told by the coach how to play.

He just goes out there and plays the right way.

He is the type of identity we want the Senators to have. He is the type of identity we had in pesky sens era and the Fisher, Kelly, Vermette, Neil era.

We need more of that, not less.

What gives you that impression? Staios preaches "patience" over immediate reaction.

I don’t know.
I also said “in FA”. Implying something in the offseason lol

Greig for a young top 4 d.
And a veteran center who can movie around.
Since we are being ridiculous, why not get a top 6 winger to go along with that? and make sure that top 4 D can play either side , skates like the wind , is mean as shit and is HUGE

Does he? I think he reputation from junior does a lot of heavy lifting.
