There is likely a big move and it’ll be chychrun and likely norris who goes.

Not Norris anymore but agreed on Chych.

Ideally we’d have all of Stutzle, Norris, Pinto and Greig in the top 9 as injury insurance.

I’d like to see them try Norris as a winger when he returns.

Could be spin but apparently the Flames think he's a legit prospect that has NHL potential.

But the fact that the Flames couldn't get a late 1st for Tanev without having to take on a bad contract says a lot.
Can't remember which talking head it was but somebody suggested it would be equivalent to Ottawa trading Kleven. I can neither confirm or deny the comp though

All this talk in the media about how 'Chychrun is going nowhere before the deadline' is really messing with my head. I just don't get it. Surely they aren't going to extend him.
Supposedly teams were / are calling .. IMO they get more now than if they wait till the draft. Maybe the market is low? I don't know how they operate.. but they sure seem like they like to take their time.

Pagnotta said the Sens want players back for Chychrun, not futures, so that’s probably why a deadline deal isn’t happening.

You can trade those futures for players in the offseason.

Also, who’s going to give a top 4 RD with term or a starting goalie for Chychrun? What exactly are these players Staios is looking?

I think you build around a core of Tkachuk, Stutzle, Sanderson, Pinto, Greig and Zub. I also think it would be a good idea to keep Giroux if the plan is to add more veterans to compete next season.

This team needs to be a lot harder to play against. More puck hounds, more hard nosed defensive players, players with a lot of battle in them and can win and maintain possession along the boards and around the net. They need more agitators or chippy players that hate losing. They need a lot more physicality, particularly on defense.

Idk, but I’d assume Staios has some sort of pulse on it. We could just as easily ask what team is trading us a top 4 RD for picks? The cap is going up this year so I don’t think there will be as many teams looking to dump players due to cap issues, you might have better opportunities for hockey deals.

Dorion-esque thinking from Staios here.

He does understand draft picks are currency, right? And he does know that he can trade for futures now and then use those to acquire players in the off-season?

I'm starting to think we didn't actually get the "best in class" GM.

Focussing on a particular player or type in a return significantly reduces the number of potential destinations for Chychrun which concurrently reduces his value. Makes no sense.

I mentioned this before, a few weeks back, my son and I met Staois and Andlauer at a function. They took pics with my son etc and had a few chats. Staois was very engaging for my 16-year-old son. In the conversation, he did say that we have too much of the same thing on this team. My son said we need guys like Trouba etc. Staois said "yes exactly", but the problem is those guys with a right-hand shot are really tough to find and all GM's are looking for the same thing. Staois certainly knows this team needs physicality, grinder non finesse players. Just those type to get the job done. He also did mention that a couple more seasoned veterans is also key.

Not sure what happened to Spencer Knight but he was highly rated in his draft yr.

Tarasenko RW ($5 mil) to Florida for Knight G ($4.5 mil) would be almost perfect if Florida would want to move him.
I also like Chychrun LD to Ann for Triston Luneau RD although not sure Ann would want to move Luneau.
Solves two problems if Knight G can return to his potential & Luneau RD pans out, it's definitely a risk.
This is what happened to Spencer Knight

They don’t need name brand, they need a cheap-ish guy who can play 17 minutes even strength next to Chabot and 2/3 minutes PK a night.

There are tons of guys who are undervalued in that kind of a role, who turn out to be very good 19-20 minute 2nd pairing guys.

Jake McCabe, Nikko Mikkola, Brayden McNabb, Erik Cernak, Alex Carrier, etc. Guys who are never seen as “a good choice for a top 4 D” by fans, who end up being extremely good in their roles while not costing a ton. They are complimentary top 4 guys, and they excel at that role, 19-20 minutes a night.

We need a RD of that type. A complimentary piece to balance the core. They need to identify 2/3 and go after them at the draft and end up coming home with 1, with a package many here will be upset about giving up, or sign one as a free agent to a deal that will be maligned

How much of the defense do we keep and how much do we overhaul? Sanderson seems like the only for sure piece to keep. Zub has been decent and has a good contract so we could start with those two.

I don't really see a compelling argument to keep any of Hamonic, Brannstrom or JBD. Moving Chychrun seems like a logical step given his flaws and the type of contract he will need to keep him. That leaves Chabot. Moving Chabot would be a major shakeup but it would also require taking a big contract back so it would need to be handled well.

Thoughts?
