I'd like to see them trade for Oliver Bonk so that we can see a Donovan - Bonk tandem on D at some point.

They aren't going to retain on him. They might take back a contract, which is basically the same thing, but more efficient.

Look at Nate Schmidt in Winnipeg. He's played his way off their team and has another year at 6M. If Ottawa takes that contract from Winnipeg, either the entire contract or 4.6M of it to offset Chychrun's contract, the return should be much bigger.

With Friedman speculating a few podcasts ago about Joseph and Winnipeg (not reporting), it makes me wonder if there is some noise there, since it is such an odd thing to randomly mention. Something like Joseph+Chychrun for Schmidt+Warm Body Forward would be cap in/cap out for Winnipeg. It should net Ottawa a big return to package both those players AND take a bad contract to offset the cap.

lol you high or something?

I think we're looking at a 18th-32nd overall, B prospect, and a 2nd with conditions that can move to a 1st.

Basically it's a mid/late 1st for a $4.6M Chych all of next year, and a 2nd and a B prospect to cover the rental for the remainder of this season? That's about the same return Alex Newhook returned last year. Sandin returned a 1st and a prospect. Ryan O'Reilly returned more as a pure rental with 19 points in 40 games.

Based on these comparables, I'm expecting a bit better return than this, provided Church can stay healthy.

I also can't imagine we get any deal without dead salary coming back which may or may not push up the return a bit more.

I hear rumors he’s going to Wpg

That's based on Garrioch saying the Jets have been calling. Unless you have some privy information, everyone has "heard" that.

I wouldn't extract that he's going to the Jets based on that information. I expect there will be many teams interested and the Jets are one of them.

Peeke's ice time has decreased this year versus the previous 2 years. I've also noticed that he has been healthy scratch this year. I think part of it is because the Jackets are trying to work Jiricek into their lineup. I think he gets a lot of hits from what I can gather. I've seen him play a little, but not enough to provide a good opinion. Just supplying that little bit of info.

I just read an Athletic article about each teams needs. For Columbus it was make space for young players. It had Peeke, Boqvist listed as maybe being available. Perhaps something could be worked out with them?

Gudbranson and Severson are ahead of him on the depth chart on the right, Severson pushed him out of the top 4 this year, so lower icetime is to be expected, but the healthy scratches are a bit concerning. Having said that, those last two bottom pair positions are being divided between Bean (LHD), Boqvist (RHD), and Jiricek (RHD and viewed as a big part of the future), Jirecek has played most games but tends to get limited icetime. Point being they have good depth on RD, so him being the odd man out is more understandable.

I'd love to get Peeke, but if we acquire him this deadline for cap reasons, Kubalik would likely have to be in a deal, which they might not have any interest in. Another option would be Joseph, again mostly for cap reasons, but then it's us being hesitant.

Peeke to us, Kubalik to a third team, third team's pick to Columbus?

is the expectation that he could play as the 2nd pairing RD, or third pairing RD?

He seems like a borderline 2nd pair RD to me, and more ideally suited to the 3rd pair.

A trade using Kubalik from our side would be fine, but I really wouldn't to give up much for him. I'm hoping that our new owners with deeper pockets could land us a good top 4 RD in free agency. Maybe my expectations are higher than some, but I'm hoping for some change and better things with new ownership.

I think the expectations should be third pair but he's young so hopefully he can bloom into more the way Methot did.

We are really thin at RD with just Zub, so I see where you are coming from. Guenette and JBD seem like 3rd line defenders to me.

I'm trying to be hopeful, but we really need a legit top 4 RD.

I don't see playoff teams, or teams with playoff aspirations trading a RD at the deadline, so free agency in my mind seems like the best path.

Numerous teams have had this issue in the past, and it's not an easy problem to resolve unfortunately. That's what I really loathed the early abandon of the rebuild. We still had some work to do in my mind as we can see now.

As an aside, I remember telling people at the time of the Methot/Foligno trade that Methot was a pretty good defender and that it was likely a good trade for us. Methot didn't come out of obscurity and become something for me. For some reason, a lot of people were more focused on how to pronounce his last name. LOL.

I’d be looking at a vet RD in UFA or trade at this point. I keep coming back to Tanev, we’d have to give more money and term than Vancouver or Toronto but it would be worth it IMO.

They would need to take Forsberg for Peeke.

Stylistically, Peeke would be a fit with what the Senators need but he is not playing well. He has been scratched for most of the season. He has 2 years left after this season. No one is taking on his contract without the Blue Jackets taking back another contract with term.

Swapping Forsberg for Peeke would still be a risk because Peeke has 1 more year than Forsberg.

Otherwise, it's going to cost Columbus a 2nd+ to get rid of him without retention.
