Why do you think Guennette might not fill a top 4 role when he is clearly doing that in Belleville & has been their best pt producing defenceman this yr & last? Mantipalo I agree with maybe filling a bottom pair spot & I see JBD eventually being a 2nd pair D. Doesn't Zub take one of those two RD spots in the top 4? I'm not sure they can trade for a RD who steps right into the top pair RD spot at the deadline, but maybe during the summer. This trade deadline should be interesting, but Staois seems like a very patient guy.
Anything is possible, I just don't see Guénette as a top 4 guy from my viewings at the NHL level, obviously that can change, he's only 22, but I see him as a 3rd pair.

Same with JBD, at least in an ideal world, he will be a bottom pair guy unless he makes some strides.

Aube-Kubel, Trenin, Carrier, Robinson, Boyd, Bleuger, Martinhook, Girgensons, Foegeel, Lafferty, Duhaime, Joshua, L. O'Brien, Stenlund, Blais, Cousins, Fischier, Cole Smith, Craig Smith, Noesen, McCarron, Sundqvist, Kiviranta, Greer, Blackwell, Lomberg, Oloffoson.

There are tons of 26-30 year old 3rd/4th liners with 5+ years pro under their belt
I posted ones I would want lol. Not every single one I saw. Not even ones I wouldn’t want. Ones I wouldn’t hate signing

I think the value is pretty spot on. Mid to late 1st, B prospect/reclamation project, 2nd. Very tough to pry blue-chip prospects from teams. A guy like Mcgoarty would be great, but unlikely the Jets put a prospect like him on the table.

One variable would be taking back a contract to make money work. Could up the return if it is a very bad caphit compared to the player, or reduce it if the player is solid but overpaid slightly.
After thinking this over more, I was trying to think of an example of a similar trade & came up with Muzzin.

Muzzin returned a 1st round pick and two prospects. The prospects were:
  • Grundstrom, 21, a second-round pick
  • Durzi, a second-round pick
Another example was Chiarot. Panthers acquired defenseman Ben Chiarot from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for prospect Tyler Smilanic, a 2023 first-round pick, and a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL draft. Montreal retained half of his remaining salary, and Chiarot was a free agent I think the following summer.

Perhaps others can think of other examples.

If Guenette & JBD can fill a top four role, I'd be happy, but also pleasantly surprised.

I'm cautiously optimistic that we have tradable assets right now without significant holes to fill in our roster.

Sign a #4 RHD in the offseason.

Trade Tank, Kubalik, and Chychrun (and maybe Brann and one of forsberg/korpi) for futures.

Add that haul to our two firsts this year (one likely top 10).

Next year just roll what we got and hope most of the kids mature and take a step forward.

I think that places us well for the future.

Would you guys do Chychrun for Bonk and 1st from flyers?
I mean that sounds great now. Bonk likely doesn’t turn into anything great. That first likely doesn’t turn into anything great either.

But it’s close to what we gave up so it become a awash

The pickings ain’t slim. There are tons of guys to fill in the bottom 6.

The ones you wouldn’t hate are slim.
lol if you say so. But that list doesn’t exactly make me excited about forward FA additions

That second last paragraph likely has us in the spot we are in right now.

Yep, definitely a Dorion screw up.

And to be honest I'm not even sure we'd get both of those pieces for Chychrun.
Yeah, people are, again, going to be disappointed in what we get in return for a guy we paid a very high price for a year ago.

People looking for blue chip, or even guys like Bonk, and likely in for a rude awakening.

I think a return on Chychrun would be quite good considering we would be able to take a contract back.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Chychrun should still be a very desirable piece, so long as he isn't blocking perspective teams the way DeBrincat did, we should be able to get back a solid return.

We're basically dealing him in a similar position to Chicago dealing DBC to us, one year left on the contract followed by the player have all (or most) of the control.

I'm still hoping the rumours are wrong and I think I'd prefer to keep Chych and actually play him on the left.

If we are trading him, a little bit of retention would go a long way. Retain 1.1M and someone has a top pairing dman next year for 3.5M.

Seth Jones to Chicago is a somewhat similar example, although he was a bigger star and was traded with one season before UFA but immediately signed an extension.

Chicago got Jones, 2021 first (#32), 2022 6th

Columbus got Adam Boqvist (at the time, still a decently high-end prospect), 2021 first (#12), 2021 2nd (#44) and a top 2 protected 2022 first from a Chicago team that was about to fall off a cliff (it became #6 overall) but didn't know it yet (they made a huge win-now trade for Seth Jones).

The Jones trade is probably what Arizona was looking at as a comparable when they shopped Chychrun the first time.

They aren't going to retain on him. They might take back a contract, which is basically the same thing, but more efficient.

Look at Nate Schmidt in Winnipeg. He's played his way off their team and has another year at 6M. If Ottawa takes that contract from Winnipeg, either the entire contract or 4.6M of it to offset Chychrun's contract, the return should be much bigger.

With Friedman speculating a few podcasts ago about Joseph and Winnipeg (not reporting), it makes me wonder if there is some noise there, since it is such an odd thing to randomly mention. Something like Joseph+Chychrun for Schmidt+Warm Body Forward would be cap in/cap out for Winnipeg. It should net Ottawa a big return to package both those players AND take a bad contract to offset the cap.

We could do better imho. Nate Schmidt is a 3rd pair defender now.
