Proposal: Free agency edition Trade Rumours/Proposals - 2025/26 Part II

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
If Toronto can flip Knies for 4 I think you do that all day. That should set them up to properly retool on the fly and get 2 players who could have an impact sooner than later at 1 and 4.

On the other side of it for Buffalo you traded Byram for the 4th so it makes it pretty easy to swap the 4th for a player like Knies. You take a young forward locked in for years at reasonnable AAV over a defensemen that was playing a secondary role on your team 1 year from being a free agent.

Incredible piece of work for Buffalo ( and Toronto) if it happens.

Them and the Sharks. Very impressed with Grier as a GM.

Teams like Tampa have been good for a long time because they cut ties with key players when they felt like it wasn’t going to be as good in the future and they capitulated on high value for many of these guys. JT Miller, Drouin, Sergachev, swapping Stammer for Guentzel, etc

I think San Jose will be a force for the next 15 years.

Honestly who cares about Zetterlund, I'd love to move him and free up 4.25m in cap, he's not a good fit for our top 6 and I think he's a waste in our bottom 6.

Who cares about his friendship with Eklund, it's the National Hockey League not the National Homie League
I care. He's versatile and still young. 4.25mil isnt that much anymore. 15 goals isnt nothing.

We just lost 35 ish goals from Brady
Zetterlund would be another 17 goals

So far only replaced about 15 goals with eklund

There’s was logic to trading Zetterlund if you needed the money to add another impact forward but I think the strategy completely changed once it was made clear that Tkachuk was not coming back.

At that point you have to look at the forward group as a unit and Zetterlund makes that unit better despite his salary. Staios is trying to build a forward group that has depth and that can come at you in waves. We won’t beat anyone with top end talent, we need to take the pack mentality and play a short-shift high-paced game. I think that’s what Staios is trying to do for now. Building that unit as a whole and in the future if a high talent forwards comes available and there’s an opportunity to make it happen he will.

And that’s the right approach because we won’t replace a 70-80 point forward that easily. We need to improve in pieces to make the team better as a whole.

He scored 29 and 22 under Green once we asked him to stop flying the zone to stretch out the oppositions D. Whether he is still capable of 35 or not, we lost that before the trade.

Ehlers scored 9 goals in 45 playoff games prior to Carolina. Stankoven's career high before last season was 38 points. Blake's was 34. Taylor Hall was considered cooked after Chicago.

Did you consider them elite heading into last season? I certainly doubt it. Lots of people thought Carolina didn't have it in them. They found the right players for the right roles and everything popped. Those guys were incredible this past playoffs. But don't act like anyone "saw that kind of depth" there before it actually happened.

Who knows what Eklund can actually be. Why can't he become Ehlers?

If Ottawa had traded Tkachuk for Stankoven and two 1sts last year, you would have been pissed, I'm sure.
Absolutely that's why having the right players for the style of hockey you play is more important. Carolina have been good for awhile now because every players buys into their system. The play the same way every night doesn't matter who they play against. And every player knows what is expected of them and they play as a team. There's no big ego on Carolina they all play for the logo on the front not the name on the back.

Wifi. keeps him as 7th D

I’m not a big fan of having a defensemen being your primary fighter/deterrent.

Anytime you have him in the penalty box you lose a defensemen for the PK and you’re running 5D for 5 minute stretched during the game. Then when he’s not in the box he’s barely good enough to be on the ice. So it ends up you have a defensemen that plays less than 10 minutes a game which tires the rest of your group and puts a lot of pressure on your other Dmen. I’d rather have Matinpalo or someone else on the 3rd pair who can actually play hockey and can skate well.

The best is to have a 4th line forward who can actually play and that’ll fight if needed. It’s a lot easier to compensate a missing forward during the game because you have 11 forwards who can help you out.

Convert him into a forward, he's a terrible defender anyway

Worst case, go 11-7, boucher special

I’d rather we try and grab a forward who can make defensemen on the other side look over their shoulder. Xhekaj doesn’t have it to play on a 4th line (I know he has in the past) IMO but I see your logic. Xhekaj could be an option at F and D.

I would rather we look at a guy like Klapka in Calgary or someone else in that mold who can forecheck properly. Maybe someone like Malenstyn or Cole Smith who I really like. I want more speed.

The problem with any of these card sites is they use Patreon as their subscription system which uses a monthly calendar. I'm sometimes tempted to get a month around the draft/FA but you pay full price for the last week of June and then it renews on July 1st. It's kind of a scam.
The problem isn't necessarily that they use Patreon. It is up to the creator to choose how to implement the billing cycle. They can absolutely choose to charge every 30 days, but choose to make the billing cycle start on the first.
The creators choose to be scummy with their billing, if it wasn't on Patreon they would still be scummy.

I feel like this particular example might be a case of just going with whatever the default is, I could be wrong, I've never set up a Patreon billing cycle, but what do I know.

Interesting, good to know!
