I don't know that the player the Senators draft at 9th isn't going to be a star. I can't say that with any certainty. Every year there are game changers drafted around that spot.

I do know that Mason McTavish isn't going to be a star. We have enough data to confidently say that much.

I think they should take a swing here. I would like the organization to look at this as an opportunity to do something bold, and not to bring in the Jake DeBrusk's of the world.
The teams we look at as having great rebuilds all have very good scouting departments and have drafted exceptionally well. We do not have the people in place to start a successful rebuild.

If the entire department was overhauled overnight I’d have a different stance. Andlauer had 2 years to shore it up, but nope.

It would cost us 14+ mil, but I’m not even against it. Rising cap and this franchise is heading towards a bad place on the ice and business wise if there isn’t anything to look forward to.
If we had to pick between paying Brady or Robo $14 million, I pick Robertson every time. It's huge chunk of our cap, but he's good enough of a winger to justify it imo.

Well we weren’t paying Brady 14 mil, but yes we need to accept that we will need to pay a premium as a small Canadian market and with a rising cap. If there’s an opportunity to actually sign him and it costs that much, you do it if you’re serious about competing in this division. We’ve got a shit ton of cap space and draft capital at the moment.

I'd be fine with 7 x 14m for Robertson.

Realistically we weren't keeping Brady for less than $13m anyway.

I'd like to see Stu, Sandy, and Chabot have a real go of it here in Ottawa and the only way it's going to happen is if they make a bold move and add a legitimate star like Robertson to this roster.

Do we need someone who can fight? I feel like we don't have a single player who can fight.

Is there any possible way we can pry Olivier out of Columbus? It sounds like they need to shake things up after that Bones post-season press conference.

Not getting my hopes up for Robertson.

What about Lafreniere + 26th overall for 9th overall.

Ottawa then picks the Rucks back to back.

9th overall is too valuable. You either use it to get a guy like Robertson or you pick.

I will be very disappointed, and basically be done as a Staios defender, if they turn the one big piece from the Brady trade into a guy of Lafreniere's or McTavish's calibre. They need star-level talent.

Pathetic that fans are digging deep into Robertson’s personal life to see if he’d potentially be open to playing here LMAO.

Regardless Robertson is soft as hell and has zero intensity PASS.

down for Laf but hes a worse player than brady and we would still be down a top 6 forward

its a step in the right direction but another guy has to be added

if we add Mctavish and Laf for draft capital plus something like greig I think the team starts to look deeper

Agreed, the hope is with more ice time/PP opportunity he could supplement some of the offense. I think stylistically he could work with Tim.

But yah, would still want to try and get another top 6 forward ideally.

I doubt Boston would move him, but I would take Mark Kastelic back. I thought he did a good job playing heavy while not being a total liability when he was on the ice. Was sad to see him go when we traded him.

The team is in a bind after trading Tkachuk for futures. Chasing a big-name target like Robertson would likely cost the 9th overall pick, one of Pinto, Batherson, or Cozens, plus another asset or two — a price that would further damage the team’s depth.

For example, losing both Tkachuk and Batherson, then signing Robertson to a $14 million AAV deal would consume most of the roughly $25 million in available cap space. That would leave almost no room to add another top-six forward, and plugging Giroux in that role isn't feasible anymore. Ottawa would still need to sign Spence and a backup goalie (roughly $8 million combined), leaving the Senators with just one legitimate top-six winger — unless Pinto slides to second-line center and Cozens shifts to the wing.

Projected lines:
Robertson – Stützle – ?
? – Pinto – Cozens

The open spots could be filled by Greig, Hallday, or Zetterlund battling it out. As many have pointed out, DeBrusk becomes a possibility as a net-front presence guy. Landing him for Zetterlund and a mid-round pick would be a strong addition — anything more is probably a no-go.

Beyond the roster concerns, the organization continues to take reputational hits. Having a franchise player push to leave for a contender doesn’t help, making it much tougher to convince players to waive no-movement clauses or commit long-term.

Alternative realistic option: Flip the 9th overall pick for Knies, or Laff, then use the 25th pick plus a sweetener to acquire another forward.

Edit:
Not surprising - We ain't getting Roberston according to Chris Johnston:

The big question is what teams would be looking to move players for picks? Vancouver is the only one that really comes to the top of my head immediately. The league is so tight that there's very few rebuilding teams right now.

Of course not, it's ludicrous that there are people who actually believe that Ottawa is a place he'd want to be. This is the new reality - players like Jason Robertson are going to do everything in their power to avoid ending up in places like this.

This is why I think the Senators should keep the draft capital and make the picks. Ottawa needs to get back to its identity of the early 2000's as a draft and develop team. There's just no other pathway available to us to acquire the sort of talent required to be competitive in the NHL these days.

This is an organization that lost its way some time ago. They need to be asset-maxxing, they need to be replenishing the pipeline by moving off players early [even when fans don't agree], they need to be investing in scouting/skills development, and they need to be prudent about which players to keep around long-term.

plenty of players out there that dont have trade protection and can be had. Mctavish an ottawa boy for example.

Senators need to make smart moves

I don't think they can be too future-oriented, because the group they have now is still young and good. But they no longer have to feel like tehy're on the clock to compete this year or next. The window can shift slightly, with everything built around Stutzle and Sanderson now. And a 9OA pick can definitely factor into that window.
