Motte is a victim of poor timing. The cap crunch has saturated the market with unqualified young players with more upside. His best bet at this point is probably signing a 2-year deal on the cheap to get out from under the flat cap, and then trying to get his big deal. That's probably a pill he's not ready to swallow quite yet, though.
Motte is a 4th liner, he should be paid accordingly

My lineup. Kravtsov sliding into the Buch spot is a no brainer. Blais is a more talented Hunt for the Panarin line. Kids dominate against other team’s third lines. Even strength ice time evenly distributed amongst the top nine with the fourth line getting minimal minutes.

View attachment 569139Robertson, Jones, Schneider rotate on the third defense pairing. Likely trade for a vet depth defenseman at the deadline.
Laf is getting that top line spot. Krav will start on the 3rd line and will battle Kakko for line 2

Probably. But I really love that kid line and salivate at the thought of them feasting on lesser competition. I also would prefer to not play Laf out of position, and Kravtsov/Buch just makes too much sense.

In my ideal scenario, the top 9 get basically identical ES ice time and Laf takes Strome’s wall on PP1. Trocheck goes net front on PP2.

The right wall was Panarin's for most of the season.

Kravtsov if he didn't have the cloud over him imo would be in the 2rw spot to start but he's gonna have to prove himself. Lafreniere is the superior player to all theee and needs a top 6 spot.

To be fair, if any team suggested they might significantly overpay for fourth liners, he came to the right place.

Honestly we have enough young hungry guys who play that style that we shouldn't be worrying about Motte. Imo Cuylle and Berard could jump in and provide a fast forecheck and maybe more offense.

He must be a good defense man, they named a trophy after him :)

Ottawa spending a ton of money this offseason. Their "rebuild" is over. They're going to scare some teams if their goaltending holds out.

Now that strome, mckegg and georgiev are gone the team is a beauty. As long as Tinordi stays banished to Hartford I have no scapegoat. Nice.
Yet! We are all waiting to see who emerges as the scapegoat.

You joke but I’m actually legitimately curious why this hasn’t been done yet. Or a max contract that can be buried. Such as, Motte for 8 years at $1.1m. If his play deteriorates just demote him and don’t make him play?
On one hand, I get it

But, like others have said, I'd pay a 4th every single year that my team is a contender to get a guy that does exactly what Motte does, but you get the certainty of health and the player is having a good effective year for what he needs to do

That hypothetical contract does have value in that you're thinking he brings like 2 mil worth of value for the pay of 1.1, but it doesn't guarantee health or particular effectiveness, and you can certainly get players overperforming their current low cap hit contract at the TDL

He got 2 years while Welinski got only 1. Signs.
Jokes aside, Drury made a point about the state of Hartford when he took over. Drury was on hand there for a while but his hands were tied in how much he could do. I think that after 1 years time we can see he has made some very good changes there.

Miller at 50% will be an option leading up to the TDL I believe. I bet by that time the price would be similar to Copp but without a condition on the 1st.

Kane could definitely "force" his way here saying he wants to be traded and utilizes his full NMC around the TDL. Might require some cap navigation but by that time we likely have had some missed games from bigger contracts that has opened a little space.

The team as constructed is good enough to be comfortably in a playoff spot come the TDL, and competing for the division title. That sounds good to me.

One thing I don't want to do is fall into another half decade habit of having no 1st rounders. Only caveat is if we are getting multi-year players using those 1sts. A 1st on a rental over and over kills a window.
