You know who completely misread the market? kadri. No one legit was paying him 8 mil when he’s a second line center at best.

He’s either going to end up on a team he doesn’t want to play for (the islanders) or he’s going to have to join us back on planet earth. He missed a lot of the action. JT Miller might be wise to take what Vancouver is offering. This ridiculous salary cap is a joke

I feel like the eastern conference as a whole improved a lot. The Metro is still going to be a gauntlet next year with the only "bad" team probably being Philly. The Atlantic is going to be much improved too, Detroit and Ottawa got massively better and all of the big boys are still going to be good. Montreal is probably the only team you can expect to be "bad" in that division.
Columbus is still bad, Devils don’t have a goaltender. I guess Vanecek and Blackwood isn’t terrible and could surprise, but I don’t see them taking that step yet. Islanders might improve with a new coaching style, or, they could be exposed. Penguins are a year older. Flyers are terrible. Not really scared of anyone in our division frankly. Hurricanes got better adding Pacioretty and Burns and dumping DeAngelo. But they lost Trocheck. They’re going to need Kotkaniemi to progress. It remains to be seen how those big changes impact their room and their on ice performance.

Unless Carolina pays up for Kadri they have a MASSIVE hole at 2C, on their pp net front and pk. Taking trocheck from them was big.

I think we win the division honestly

Well they've got Jordan Staal moving from 3c to 2c which... I've seen worse depth.

They could also ask Necas or Jarvis to play center.

I think the cap has been too tight for guys looking at the big $$
you make that space for gaudreau (even then only a few teams were in on him) but not for 32 year old kadri

Also, caps are looking real bad right now unless they go out and find a way to get kadri

The Atlantic looks much more balanced. Ottawa & Detroit will be much better next year. Florida & Boston have gotten worse. Tampa got worse but are still a contender. Toronto is the best team on paper if their goaltending holds up.

The Metro is interesting. Right now I think we are clearly the best team. No obvious holes on the roster and the best goalie by a long shot.

Pittsburgh is another year older but might be our biggest competition. Their goaltending is suspect as always but if they can turn Marino++ into JT Miller, and stay healthy, we will have our hands full in a playoff series.

Carolina clearly saw they needed to add veteran leadership after we rattled their cage in R2. Pacioretty & Burns are good but usually aging players with injury issues don't get healthier. There's also a strange dynamic going on with Freddie Anderson; lots of chatter that his teammates were not happy with him dragging his feet to come back. We have passed them on the totem pole.

Islanders struck out big time with Gaudreau. An elite talent like that wouldve put them right there with us as the top dog. Coaching change may give them a bump, and Sorokin is the closest thing to Igor in the division, but i find it strange they arent giving him the keys to car and keeping Varlamov around. Their Cup window is likely over but theyll make the playoffs and be a pain in the ass.

Is this the year Washington falls off? Lot's of injured guys who have a lot of mileage on them. Ovie can carry them and Kuemper is better than Vanacek/Samsonov but he may get exposed off the Avs. Not concerned about Caps at this point.

The Devils are still small, soft and dont have a goalie.

Gaudreau still doesnt get Columbus to the playoffs, but good for them and their fans that they finally nab a big UFA.

The Flyers are a big steaming pile of garbage and may legitimately get the #1 overall pick.

Even if we dont win the division, what team are you scared of beating Igor 4 out of 7?

They gave Kotkaniemi all the money. He's either their 2C or 3C. It's a downgrade right now, but after 82 games will it still be? That I think is their biggest question. Similar to us seeing if Kakko and Lafreniere explode, it's Kotkaniemi for them.

My main concern coming out of this free agency period with the roster effectively set is team depth.

On paper we now have a pretty good 20 man roster, assuming that the youthful third defensive pairing grows and improves together.

The issue is we don't have much depth for the top 9 or top 4 if there are major injuries. Goodrow on the 4th line was one of the only things that kept it from being the worst one in the postseason most of last year, and he's clearly the first man up into the top 9 if there is an issue.

We're asking a lot of Kravtsov and Jones to come in and be effective right away. I feel good about both players, but you really never know. Kakko was, after all, probably the worst forward in the league his first NHL year.

Which really puts us in another situation where Drury will be sending out a few more assets for Vatrano/Braun type rentals at the deadline, potentially, which isn't the end of the world.

Is it surprising that Drury has been fine to trade away tons of future 1st and 2nd round picks, but has not let go of any of our current organizational prospects? Maybe Drury thinks Lundkvist, Jones, Robertson, Cuylle, Othmann are close enough that they could make the team in late Trouba&Kreider -window or early Fox/Lafreniere window

For those talking about adding Kane at the deadline, at what cost and how are we fitting him under the cap?

Holy crap, has anyone looked at the Oilers cap issues?!?!

8 forwards signed
6 d-man
2 goalies

Still have:
Puljujaarvi, Yamamoto and McLeod to sign

$1.318m cap space

They may gain some of it back with Smith and Klefbom if they are on LTIR, that would be an additional $6.3m but is Klefbom 100% out for the season?
They have 7 dmen including Broberg, though he could be sent down as he isn't subject to waivers.

Puljujaarvi will be traded at some point and they can waive Smith once he comes off LTIR. Klefbom is done. He hasn't played since the 2019-20 season. They should have enough space to re-sign McLeod and Yamamto and fill out the other spots.

Exactly. It's going to be a bloodbath in the Metro just like it usually is. I still feel it's either us or Carolina winning the division.

Easier to do at the deadline because you can run his salary through a third team, and it’s not costing the team taking a % a lot of money in actual dollars to get an additional asset.

No clue on the cost though, he’s going to tell the Hawks where he wants to go.

Funny little maneuver his camp pulled by using the "NYR is going to pay Kadri 7-8M AAV" card. Became very clear that Trocheck was the choice long before FA opened at noon yesterday. Drury and the Rangers never had serious interest in Kadri. That tactic didn't work. He hasn't found the paydirt he'd hoped for. He's a nice player but teams arent dicking around with the salary cap the way it is and a hazy next couple of years in front of us.

Some players still got good contracts though beside Johnny hockey. Tampa extended Sergachev 8.5x8 and Cirelli 6.25X8, Palat got 6X5 which is nuts. 35yo Malkin got over 6 for 4 years also. There were others too.
