Just noticed that Marincin is a UFA at the end of the season .. Thankfully.

Also I don't hate the idea of bringing back Hainsey on a 1 year, $2 mill type of deal, as a backup plan if they can't legitimately upgrade the top pairing.

Rielly-Hainsey
Muzzin-Dermott
Rosen-Liljegren

(I assume Sandin will still be with the Marlies to start next season, but he could very well make the Leafs out of camp).

The only other name that really interests me for a bargain contract would be Stralman.

I kind of like the idea of Deryk Engelland as a cheap #6 defenseman. They'll need one extra defenseman going into next season if no one is traded. Many people have expressed a desire to ice a tougher line-up. Engelland is one of the tougher players still playing in the league, he had over 19 minutes per game this season and he'll only cost 1M-1.5M on the cap. Borgman in over Ozhiganov will be huge for team toughness as well.

Rielly - Dermott
Muzzin - Zaitsev
Rosen - Engelland
ex. Borgman

Call-up #1 - Sandin
Call-up #2 - Liljegren
Call-up #3 - Holl

If they can move Zaitsev like in your scenario, I'd take a run at Myers first and then Stralman.

The Toronto Star’s Kevin McGran revealed after the signing that it was Babcock’s old player in Detroit, Pavel Datsyuk, who had a hand in convincing Mikheyev to play for Babcock. Datsyuk announced last week that he will not be returning to the KHL’s SKA St. Petersburg next season.

Please no. I can't handle Hainsey for another full season with Rielly 5 on 5 and Hainsey playing very late in the third when we need a goal.

I appreciated his contributions but he's 38 years old. It's time to move on.

I sure hope Dubas and the Leafs are being a lot more pro-active and smart about adding to their defense. Re-signing Hainsey should be far down the list of things to do.

Hainsey's going to get more than 1.5 mil and he'll get term too, I think he'll be missed once he's gone, he was over used, but can still be effective if used properly.

Term to a 38 year old? Lamoriello would I'm sure, but that's about it.

I think your going to be surprised at how good a deal he'll get. If used properly, he might have 2 or 3 years of serviceable use left in the tank.

I shouldn't be surprised at the stupidity of some managers of giving term to a 38 year old... you're right.

Hainsey on the 3rd pairing is a smart signing. Unfortunately I don't think he'd be used that why in Toronto. Not until we have a proper #2 RHD.

If we do end up keeping marleau. Then we need cheap labor.

If he were to come back for cheap And the leafs decided to use muzzin zaitsev as their shutdown pair

I wouldn’t mind one more year of hainsey as a stop gap. He would be fine with rielly on a short term cheaper deal. That’s a lot of ifs.

But a

Muzz. Zaitsev
Rielly hainsey
Dermott Rosen/Lilly

Wouldn’t be terrible. I’m hoping we have sometbjbg up our sleeves but if not we are going to have to go cheap

If the Leafs can acquire a legit dman to pair with Reilly on top pair, I would also be on board in re-signing Hainsey on a cheap 1 yr deal to fill a spot on the last pairing. Ultimately I would like to see Gardiner and Zaitsev gone, and #2 brought in and re-signing Hainsey.

I wonder if Sandin pushes his way on this team next year. If so he's another LHD. It may make Dermott a viable trade chip of he can't play the right side. We could use him for, or even Sandin for a another young RHD.

I like, I like ...BUT... we’re going to have to retain salary on Marleau because no team would take in $6M of salary for a 39-40 year old and I believe Zaitsev is worth than 7th (more like a 3rd-4th rounder or a prospect blocked by depth that needs a look at the NHL for evaluation).

I'd be surprised if Hainsey isn't back.

I was at the Guelph Storm game last night vs Ottawa and one player who really stood out to me was Isaac Ratcliffe. Really impressed with his size and speed and has unbelievable skill. Would love to pry him out of Philadelphia. On a side note, Suzuki looks like a Marner-lite. Super skilled and smooth, dominated the game last night.

We all know the answer. Toys have tobe taken away from him

He's not the only one. When the Canes picked him up, the Jets fans said: "Hainsey is fine as long as you don't over slot him. Jets used him as a top pairing D and shouldn't have." What did the Canes do? Slot him on the top pairing for most of his time in Carolina. Pens used him that way in the playoffs when they picked him up (fans complained, but they won the cup but Pens fans weren't sorry to see him go). Then, Leafs pick him up and do the same thing.

4 different teams, 4 different coaches did the same thing. Either Hainsey is better than we fans want to think, or coaches are swayed by experience and a "safe" option.

Maybe somewhere in between.

That 100%, every coach does that. I really don't think they can help themselves.

We talk more about the RFAs that need new contracts for obvious reasons of course.

The UFAs are: Hutchinson, Marincin, Hainsey, Gardiner, Ennis.

Most if not all will be subtracted from the roster due to the cap crunch. Most are not critical to success, except of course the two (2) UFA defenders that are both part of our top 4 and log a lot of minutes.

Hope that Hainsey would agree to a haircut and pay decrease of $1 to 1.5 million as many suggest, along with just a one-year term. They are UFAs and they will decide if that's what they want. Its not up to the Leafs, and its hardly automatic that this will occur.

Having a good backup goaltender will be important if Freddie were to go down of course.
