If the prevailing notion is that CAR wouldn't give Aho the big signing bonus money up front which is important for young players and long term financial health, then an offer sheet is the only way to go to force that contract structure. Would another team have offered a sheet at the next tier with a bigger AAV? This must have been the best offer dollar for dollar wise for Aho. Carolina wanted to buy more UFA years with a 6 year contract. It's all planning for the next career contract. He'll be 26 and in line for a $12-13M contract if he reaches UFA in 2024-2025 if Panarin can get $11.6M today.

Thats a dumb move by Aho. Maybe he and his agent don't understand the offer sheet process? He's a point a game player at 21 and just gave up UFA years for 8.45 M a year. Panarin just scored almost 12 and Aho only had to wait a year or two? He did the Habs and Car a huge favor
You are jumping the gun. 1 UFA year. No arbitration rights and Carolina was squeezing him. They were offering $6m, going up to $8m. They were never going to accept less than max term. Aho just got more money than if he even took 8 years. He gets to UFA at 26.

If Carolina matches, they have to alter their business this year. They got Aho at a worse deal than if the habs stayed out. This is how the CBA should be used.

Waddell sounds annoyed and is not being as proper presser with his responses.

This is a FANTASTIC question to anyone who knows.
They cannot.

10.3 Offer Sheet and First Refusal Procedures.
(a) When a Restricted Free Agent receives an offer to sign an SPC from any Club (the "New Club") other than his Prior Club, which offer the Player desires to accept, he shall give to the Prior Club, in accordance with Exhibit 3 hereto, a completed certificate substantially in the form of Exhibit 6 attached hereto (the "Offer Sheet"), signed by the Restricted Free Agent and the New Club, which shall contain the "Principal Terms" (as defined below) as well as all other terms of compensation of the New Club's offer. The Prior Club, within seven (7) days after the date it receives the Offer Sheet, may exercise or not exercise its Right of First Refusal, which shall have the legal consequence set forth below. Once an Offer Sheet for a Restricted Free Agent has been received by the Prior Club, the Prior Club may not Trade or otherwise Assign its Right of First Refusal for such Restricted Free Agent.

Aho gets a lot of guaranteed money and it takes him right to free agency so he can cash in on another huge contract

Carolina likely didn't want to do a contract that takes him right up to free agency and instead buy out more UFA years which could impact Aho's next contract negatively

Good players never make it to UFA.

Nichuskin is a weird player. Last season he was basically literally the "human eraser" on the ice...except for both teams.

His team didn't score while he was on the ice, but neither did the other team. He just erased all hockey play.

So NHL 19 was right. Shocker.

So Montreal can't do anything or presumably won't do anything for 7 days. Anders Lee is now in Limbo. Hawks still interested and haven't made any moves.
