The proper answer is Andersen WAS the better goaltending while Mrazek currently IS the better goaltender.

Mrazek has had his ups and downs with injuries but still had an overall decent bounce back last year posting:

W: 6
L: 2
Ties: 3

GP: 12
Shots Against/60: 26.65
High Danger Shots Against/60: 9.48
xGA/60: 2.59

GAA: 2.06
High Danger save%: .830
Overall Save%: .923

Really good numbers but only 12 starts so theres an issue with sample size here to go along with the injury risk to the signing for the Leafs.

Andersen meanwhile is coming off probably the worst season of his career (and they kept throwing him out there to try and get him going). His stats were:

W: 13
L: 8
Ties: 0

GP: 24
Shots Against/60: 28.27
High Danger Shots Against/60: 7.69
xGA/60: 2.31

GAA: 2.96
High Danger save%: .780
Overall Save%: .895

Double the starts of Mrazek but really awful numbers all year despite being behind a tighter D makes the Andersen (who has his own injury issues) signing an even bigger gamble by the Canes IMO. Maybe the change of scenery will do him good though who knows?

Andersen is a regular season goalie no team will ever win big in the playoffs with.
Mrazek may not be 'better' overall but I don't think he's a liability in elimination games, or at least isn't until proven guilty.

For that reason alone, I take Mrazek here.

The Bruins faced Carolina twice in the playoffs and the Leafs twice. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Andersen was a much tougher goalie to beat in the playoffs. Andersen had some bad Game 7 performances, Mrazek was bad in every game.

Mrazek is borderline average. I still take Andersen who likewise was overrated for years.

No he really wasn't. I hate this so much. Was Vlassic overrated or did he just heavily decline? Freddy was elite for like 3 seasons with the Leafs, and then he fell off a cliff the last 2. If he can refind his form, then this poll is easily him. I have not seen anything to convince me he is that goalie anymore.

Neither can stay healthy. When healthy, Freddie should be the more consistently good of the 2.

If both are healthy it's Freddie, but Freddie hasn't been healthy in 2 years so we don't know if he's still capable to being the guy.

The Leafs Defense has been pretty good for the last couple years yet Andersen has among the worst statistics in the league of that time. His playoffs have been just as bad. He is literally among the worst starters in the league. Every goalie who has been in the Leafs net for a significant amount of time has outperformed him over that time. Mrazek by a large margin for me.

Andersen is really bad now.

Andersen has, unlike Mrazek, shown that he's capable of being a regular starter in the NHL for more than a single season. However, he's on the wrong side of 30, massive, and has had injury issues for the past couple of years. Given that? Complete toss-up.

On top of his groin being held together with duct tape and prayers at this point, Andersen is one of the weakest goalies mentally. One bad game can easily turn into a bad month with him, and even when he's having a good month he'll still allow an unreasonable amount of goals in the first/last minute or two of the period.

Honestly, don’t know. I wouldn’t want either to start but Andersen at least was once very good while Mrazek has never been that, but in the other hand Mrazek has been the better goalie lately.

I think both are best as back ups. Andersen has proven to be a solid starter in the past but recently has not played well. It’s really a coin flip.

Andersen has been bad for about 2 years. Injury issues as well. Before that he was top 10 goalie but hard to see him getting back to that on the wrong side of 30.

When healthy, Andersen is the proven and better Goalie. The Canes are betting on him being healthy this season, if so, he should bounce back to more his norms, which is one of the better Goalies in the NHL. If he isn't healthy, which is always a possibility he may still hang in there since Canes are pretty good defensively.

People keep saying that health is a big detractor for Freddie as if Mrazek hasn't been dealing with major injury issues in each season he was with the Canes.

Also, goalies tend to bounce back when they play for the Canes. Each of Mrazek, McIlhenny, Reimer, and heck, even Forsberg in his short stint, came in as 'hot garbage' only to put up pretty respectable numbers here. I wouldn't bet against Freddie having a similar bounce back year.

More age, than health.
