Injury Report: Freddie Andersen to be out until early February or March following knee surgery (return Jan 17)

Except if it is a mental issue, that isn't a question of "compete." That's a serious medical condition that he likely has little control over. So you constantly going after him for "the Freddie flu" is in poor taste, to say the least.

My question would be, if it is a mental problem, why has he not reached out to the NHLPA about it (that we're aware of)?
Maybe because we never pushed the issue and gave him the time he needed?

I do think we need to explore all options and probably consider finding another good goalie for insurance. But many thought Freddie wouldn't make it back last season and he did. I imagine he will this season as well and it makes things difficult to juggle.

I mean, day to day ended up being effectively a season ending injury if the current timeline to recover from surgery is correct
If the current timeline is to be believed he will be back with over 30% of the regular season left.

That’s is almost as far off from effectively season ending as the original diagnosis. Whether you buy the new timeline is a different discussion all together.

Hmmm now that I am checking again that should be early Feb or March, I think my math didn't math well

even if he makes it back I dont want him in the playoffs unless hes backing up.

I'm done with his failures.
I understand your POV and also am not a current fan of Freddie.

To be fair, he did play superbly in the playoffs/series against Cats 2 years ago. His absence due to blood clots LY perhaps didn’t give him enough time to be totally ready (mentally and physically) too.

Hopefully this knee surgery fixed whatever has caused him to have issues. Otherwise, sign me up for a trade for a younger/high quality goalie versus getting an oft injured retread.

Rod was vocal about not liking a platoon of goalies, and that led to the team signing Andersen and him playing 52 games his first year here. Him breaking down, you have to think at least partially because of that season, has to have the front office and especially Rod reconsidering, no? You'd hope.

For context, Andersen started 51 games his first season year, and the next 2 and a half he started 53.

A view on Gibson:

One thing I’d say about that is the difference between the way Edmonton defends and Carolina does I think the canes can make a lot of goalies look good the way they tend to not give up so many high danger chances and shots against. I think Gibson would do quite well in Carolina imo you never know what a fresh start on a contending team can do for a guy who’s been on a basement dweller team for years

Based on what every goalie who leaves looks like post Canes, I think they can get any of the top 90 goalies in the world and make him look like a capable NHL goalie.

It's been 5 weeks....range was 8 to 12 weeks. I would think by now he has been actively rehabbing post-surgery. Timeline date ranges:

8 weeks = Jan. 18th
12 weeks = Feb. 15th

Since it's Freddie it is easy to be pessimistic and think there are 7 weeks left but the shorter range would get him back sooner.

For those knee surgery knowledgable folks, how much practice ice time would he need before he would be a go for games?

I’ve assumed from the beginning (because its Freddie) he will play rehab games in Chicago during the 4 nations break to get ready. Thats right about 12 weeks to a game situation.

Not a doctor, or person with any type of inside info.

I now take it as a good sign that Freddie was in the locker room after the Pitt game.
And....unexpectedly, he looks to be coming back to play on the lower end of the 8-12 weeks.

Woohoo....we can use him.

I'm glad to see Freddie back and I hope he plays well for us in his return.

But I think we can't get fooled again, and regardless of how he plays in his return, the organization needs to move on from him at the end of this contract
And if he starts floundering in the playoffs, don't just keep putting him back in net every f***ing night hoping he's magically going to get better and go lights out
