You lost me here/what did I miss/ I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue

Hughes wasn't originally on the roster due to injury, but wants to come back for the finals to replace McAvoy, and Bill Daly is saying no.

There should be no restrictions (beyond nationality) as to who can play in a best vs best tournament.

Canada has said they are fine with it as well, it's just lunacy from the NHL.

Terrible call by the NHL, this game (and tourney) is getting so much hype and they choose to snub one of the most dynamic US defense man. Nucks fans are probably breathing a huge sigh of relief after seeing what happened to the Tkachuks and McAvoy.

Most tournaments are closed to roster/squad additions of this nature once it starts. The football World Cup certainly does.

Classic NHL. A fake tournament that sprung out of nowhere but they are going to clutch to the rules of a fake tournament v. adding one of the game's elite talents.

This past weekend was a walk down memory lane to the SI cover of "Why the NHL's Hot, and the NBA's not" from 1994. Then they immediately had the lockout. This isn't on the same level, of course, but it is just more classic NHL not being able to get out of its own way.

I think they're probably miffed about it too but they have to stick to the rules they established especially given one team already had to abide by them (Canada) in their roster modification.

In retrospect it is a pretty obviously stupid rule to even really have a roster limit frankly if you truly want best on best and it should be a fully 'open' tourney (except for gameday roster naturally).

Canada already added Harley during the tournament so this doesnt hold up. Hughes was named to the roster to start with so it shouldnt be a big deal.

Wouldn't changing the rules at the last minute make it more "fake" ?

The rules are the rules. It's the same for both sides.

“I really want to, and [the tournament has] obviously been really hard to watch,” Hughes said (via NHL.com). “Want to play, but I guess, from what I can understand, the rules are the rules. Canada was able to bring Harley in because Theodore got injured and Makar was sick, so they were down to five [defensemen]. In the U.S. circumstance, with Charlie going down, they still have their six ‘D,’ so I think that is where it changes my position a little bit.”

Can't get more fake if it is already fake: that's the point.

This is an extended all-star game. Let him play.

I was at Finland vs Sweden on Saturday, and Kempe looked dangerous every time he touched the puck. We were so bummed he didn't score on his drive to the net in OT right before Granlund won it--chalk it up to the Kings' general OT luck, I guess.

Also got to attend USA vs FIN and USA vs CAN in Montreal. The latter was the most exciting/loudest game I've been to in-person, only one that comes close for me was Game 1 of the 2014 SCF when we came back and won it in OT.

Fair enough, that sort of Inconsistency is unacceptable. I haven’t followed the tournament very closely at all so wasn’t aware of Canadas roster change.

Was that due to someone being injured and replaced? That is different to someone regaining fitness and replacing a fit player. But that’s the only justification I can see for a different approach.

Never mind johnjm answered it.

Predicting a Canada close win 3-2 tonight...maybe 4-2 (w/ late empty netter).
Too hard to beat a team twice in less than a week. Plus the injuries.

Is it a stupid rule? Yes.

Should you change it in the middle of the tournament? Absolutely f***ing not.
This is a talent showcase for the NHL. There is nothing sacred about this tournament.

They should just let him play for the betterment of the game and the league; however, they could at least let the team being "wronged" make the decision. I'm sure the Canadian team would want to face the best possible lineup: all these guys want to win with no excuses.

We're out here acting like they are changing a salary cap rule mid-season in the NHL v. letting a guy who is no longer injured replace a guy that is now injured.
