IDK, he saw all three shots and they beat him clean. The MacKinnon goal looked pretty soft to me, Bennet and McDavid's were both good shots but I think he should have had at least 1 of those 3. Helle wasn't awful but the guy with the maple leaf on the sweater was the better goalie tht game.

Hellebuyck clearly saw all three shots and was beaten cleanly... WTF. Never mind seeing the puck, I can't even see Hellebuyck.

We'll just have to agree to disagree here.

A feel good story of a guy who played very well when called upon, and a guy who's clearly on the last few holes so to speak of his career (loved Doughty for Canada over the years), does nothing to dethrone JoMo as clearly the #2 Canadian overall defender.

Morrissey did nothing but raise his stock in this tournament. So many casual hockey fans were introduced to just how solid of a player he is, especially in the absence of Makar.

You build defensive cores around guys like that.
This week cemented it for me too. JoMo definitely the 2nd best Canadian defenseman.

it's weird I've seen more people blaming helle here then the main boards...
It's a weird take, for sure. Goal one - screened (they showed a good replay angle during the game and you can tell he doesn't see it until it's right on top of him). Goal two - short side roof on a play he had to be ready to move laterally. Goal three - McD right in the slot, uncontested.

Not to mention the 2 or 3 or 4 times Canada crashed the crease and he kept the puck out.

This looks like the entire Colorado series doesn’t it.

Listening to Kevin Woodley on Illegal Curve (great segment) and he said that the most dangerous scoring chances in the league are this play (multi layered screen with a high shot that gets through). It has a higher success rate than break always.

Hellebuyck gave up 1 goal to Canada in the first game and 2 goals in regulation in the final the first of which (See photo) he had zero chance on. He can be better in the playoff for us but he was very very good in this tourney.

Also note to Jets, don’t let this play happen over and over in the playoffs again this year please and thank you.

Helle kept his team in it the first half of the game while Jordan was scrambling all.over the place creating chaos for his.

Helle was beaten on a world class shot to the top corner in OT by a player alone in the slot. No one was saving that one. Blame Mathews for leaving his check to triple team Mitch.

Matthews and Adam Fox with the textbook puck watching film example. It was like they were magnetized to the puck screaming over to defend Marner.

McDavid had time to pack a lunch and then rip that thing upstairs top shelf.

Mind boggling stuff.

Not a chance that he saw McKinnon's shot. The Bennett goal was a perfect shot. Hellebuyck had to be prepared for Bennett to cut across the crease, but he roofed it in a perfect spot. He probably wants the McDavid goal back. It was wide open from the slot but if he was in perfect position and stance he makes that save most of the time. The problem on that play was the US team puck-watching. Matthews should have been focused more on protecting the slot there, instead of chasing the puck into the corner while Canada had possession.

I thought JoMo had a great tournament and solidified himself on the Olympic team imo.

Helle had a great tournament as well, was a rock every game he played.

I feel for KC, just couldn't get his game going and got rendered to the 13th forward.

I think we have two players that can draw a lot of confidence from this event and another who probably has a chip on his shoulder.

Processing it the morning after.

Either team could have won this, it came down to one play. If you take away the empty net USA and Canada played 7 periods and ended up pretty much tied.

If I look at Canada I think their top 3 D men were Makar (Cleary the best), Morrissey (was so solid) took the #1 spot when Makar was out, and Toews because of his insane chemistry with Makar. Last night Toews and Makar did the really heavy lifting with almost 28:00 minutes each. After the top cluster I would probably slot Harley at the top of the next group moving forward towards the Olympics. I do think a guy like Pietrangelo might be in the mix next year with Doughty (veteran presence) but we did learn this tournament that young guys can step up (Faber Harley)

Forwards wise for Canada I have to think about it more. There is an allot to process and I might come back later to post my thoughts on that.

For team USA Slavin, Faber, and McAvoy were their big 3. Last night Slavin and Faber played almost 29:00 minutes and were the clear top pair. Nice to see a guy like Slavin get spotlighted for being so fricken amazing at what he does well. Interesting that Brock Faber is 6’1” 200 pounds and he was their trusted high minutes shut down defender vs our best. Minnesota got him in a trade with LA (but I digress).

I think it should be mentioned that Canada dodged a bullet with Matthew Tkachuk being injured. He tried last night but was only able to play 6:00 minutes. In this style of game the Tkachuk brothers are probably the most dangerous two forwards on team USA.

Probably Matthews best game but he got stymied. Jack Hughes did not get going this tournament and neither did Connor, both play a finesse game and are offensive talents. I don’t think Connor will make the Olympic team but if it’s a IIHF event they will still need Hughes there.

I thought Hellebuyck was really good this tournament. The game winning goal was a defensive breakdown leaving the best player in the world alone in the slot and he made team USA pay.

Still really don’t like all the injuries but the hockey was sensational.

I’m sure I will have more thoughts today.

Great event even though cost benefit is debatable.
One player that was underwhelming to me was Fox. He just seemed to lack the pace to make an impact with the puck and wasn't able to handle the speed and size of Canadian forwards in his zone.

Probably the most perplexing decision last night goes to Sullivan and that USA staff....

Was happy from a Canadian fan perspective to see KFC scratched to rest him. That said, they sit KFC for Kreider, who ultimately ends up playing a grand total of 6:25 last night.

Hindsight is 20/20 -- but this also coincides with the fact that Matt Tkachuk clearly was battling an injury, which they would have known the extent of over the last few days, and he decides to suit up, but only plays 6:47.

I understand Connor had his struggles at points in the role given, but essentially, the USA played with 10 forwards last night, leaving one of the most potent goal scorers up in the press box.

You were always going to be hard pressed to compete in a game like that if it went into deep waters playing two forwards short all game.

Pretty crazy.

That puck went inches behind Reinhart's butt as he moved across in front of Hellebuyck. Impossible to react and the puck hit the top corner.
