Interesting interview with Lebrun where he reveals who he thinks is on the team after calling around the league.

Using his "what hes heard" list:

Forwards so far:
McDavid
Crosby
MacKinnon
Point
Marchand
Marner
Konecny
Hagel
Cirelli
Reinhart
Bennet
Stone

On D so far:
Makar
Pietrangelo
Theodore
Sanheim
Morrisey

Goalies so far:
Hill
Binnington

He said he believes Marner will be the only Leaf to make the team.
He also said Doughty will not be on the list but team Canada reached out to him in the last 24 hours to say they will be keeping an eye on how he comes back from injury. Potential first call up in case of injury?

That leaves the 13th forward (not Tavares), 2 dmen (not Doughty) and the 3rd goalie.
Reports of Jarvis making it. That's your 13th

Hockey Canada needs to win both 4 Nations and the WJC with the selections they’ve been making lately. They will be publicly crucified if they lose with all the questionable selections.

A TON OF skill left off this team in lieu of grinders if the rumours are true:
-Robert Thomas
-Connor Bedard
-Mark Scheifele
-Matthew Barzal
-Nick Suzuki
-Carter Verhaege
-Alexis Lafreniere

Not sure a single one of those guys should be on the team based on merit/needs.

I've been a big proponent of Thomas being on the team but he's been injured this season. Bedard I think we all expected to be there but he's been really struggling and given his lack of 200 foot play and lack of experience he couldn't afford a poor start.

None of the other guys were ever front runners for the team and have all largely struggled or at least not stood out.

Rumors can make some interesting lineups. Lemme try.

Hagel-McDavid-Marner
Point-MacKinnon-Konecny
Marchand-Crosby-Reinhart
Bennet-Cirelli-Stone
Jarvis

Team Canada has taken the 2-way puck hound approach. Puck pressure on the opposing teams is going to be intense. Maybe worries about net front?

Team looks good, but I would have opted for a more skilled LW option instead of Bennett wit this set-up. Could have been Verhaege, Thomas (move Cirelli to wing) Laf or Scheifele. Think it would made the team gel better and created a more well-rounded bottom 6.

I mean Sanheim is really really good. Just because he is wildly under rated doesn't make him a bad choice. Parayko shouldn't be there over someone like Weegar though.
My understanding of Sanheim was that he's had a tough few years but maybe I'm wrong and it's a misperception thing.

Cliff notes from the CJ/Lebrun piece at the Athletic about the decisions:

Projected forward lineup

Reinhart – McDavid – Marner
Marchand – Crosby – MacKinnon
Hagel – Point – Stone
Bennett - Cirelli - Konecny
Jarvis

- Tavares, Duchene and Stamkos didn't get support over younger options
- Scheifele isn't a 4th liner (reading between the lines, defensive concerns)
- Jarvis starting as the 13th forward

- Wanted to take the two established NHL pairs on defense in Toews/Makar and Theodore/Pietrangelo
- Offensive defensemen boxed out with Makar dominating the PP time
- Doughty had inside track on a spot before his injury

- Binngton and Hill taken for Cup wins
- Montembault taken because he's young enough to be an Olympic candidate (uh Logan Thompson is younger but okay)

Overall a lot of talk about taking Cup winners...

Definitely not a bad roster. My two biggest problems with it are taking Colton Parayko and not taking Logan Thompson.

Also kind of concerned there's not a great 3C option if they want to move Point up to the top 6. Swap him and Marchand and you have the 6 most skilled players all together, but Bennett or Cirelli being the 3C feels a bit much for them. I might've picked another centre ahead of Jarvis as the 13th forward for more flexibility. Honestly, I would probably have Celebrini as the 13th forward for another skilled centre option.

Every pick except Montembeault makes sense. Barzal, Tavares, Duchene, Bedard, Stamkos, etc. aren't skilled enough to play top six/top PP unit on this team and the forwards who made the cut are more reliable in depth/PK minutes while still being plenty skilled. Sanheim-Parayko is who you want on your third pair over offensemen like Bouchard and Dobson. Canada should be the favorite to win the tournament in spite of goaltending.

Daccord must be crushed. when you gotta break it to a kid from Massachusetts that his life long dream of playing for Team Canada is not going to happen that can't be anything less then soul extinguishing.

I never would have expected Jarvis, good call by some of the guys here thinking Cirelli was a legit option. Parayko is less of a surprise though I don't think many people thought going into this season he really would be here but I can see why he is here and I think he can do well. My man Monty made it ...................chance for you be our good luck charm again? Konecny flat out played his way on and so did Sanheim.

If the rumoured team is true it is a somewhat conservative team but pretty easy to imagine it functioning. Everyone has a clear role, though there are a lot of RW types. It's basically a team built to win a harder version of the Stanley Cup playoffs, but there are no seven game series here. Clear premium placed on championship experience and a fair number of tenacious players. If that is the team then I am disappointed that they were not able to go younger, though I still hope for the best.
