Would be nice if they would add Russia and then maybe a world team to give other top stars like Draisaitl/Kopitar/etc a chance to playGive me this tournament every year
It is superior to the All Star slop put on by the NBA and NHL

I think the IIHF guy (can't remember his name right now) shares his own part of the blame. Just felt like 2 ego's in a room trying to make money and everyone else suffers while noone made moneyThat's pretty much my mid-season international tourney proposal I write on HF every year or so. Those exact 6 clubs, take a mid-season break every year for it and never do an all star game again.
Of course Bettman is the reason we haven't already been doing international tourneys like this - but he'll take credit for what a great idea it is just like he is with this tournament.
The new schedule should increase excitement for all 3 events. Not having the all star game every year should make it more meaningful, but the NHL needs to accept that players aren't gonna take that as seriously as this or the Olympics. It just needs to be a fun break for the players as well as the fans. This is what the NHL has been starving us of for far too many years
It's amazing how different players play when it's their country crest on the jersey and not a shitty all star game more geared for small children than entertaining hockey. The new schedule should increase excitement for all 3 events. I don't think Canada can do that anymore. Quebec and the east don't put out enough quality anymore. Maybe west and Ontario but I think you can still keep it a nation thing but gotta add that world team so the random players from smaller nations get a chanceI think it would be cool to have 3 Canadian teams - French, east, west or French, Ontario, other - plus a couple of American teams - maybe NE centered and Midwest centered and then add the rest of the people to one team or the other — plus some European teams - Sweden, Finland, Central Europe (Czechs, Slovaks, Swiss, Germans, etc). It would be wild to have a Werenski Midwest US jesrsey.

Without getting political, actions have consequences and I don't blame Bettman for not including Russia...That's pretty much my mid-season international tourney proposal I write on HF every year or so. They could have alternated the World Cup and Olympics every 2 years and everyone should have been happy was more in line with my point.A tourney like this doesn't have and doesn't need IIHF approval. The NHL could have done this any non-Olympic year they wanted to.
The All Star game will be a dud no matter how many years you wait for it. Hockey without intensity just isn't worth watching.
or a real goalieThis is about time Canada begins to regret not calling up Eberle
It's that way with every sport though really, I haven't cared about the NFL all star game or skills comp basically ever. Even the NBA dunk competition kinda got played out, there's only so many new ways to dunk a ball.A tourney like this doesn't have and doesn't need IIHF approval. I agree, but still Canada only scored 1 goal so faror a real goalie
I don't hate Brady as a player but f*** Keith Tkchunk and his crotch fruitMany hate him, but man, would it be great to get Brady in Columbus

USA scored 2 saveable goals. Could easily be a 1-1 game nowMany hate him, but man, would it be great to get Brady in Columbus

Having said that, you put a Russian team in this tourney and it takes it to a whole nother level with how good that team would be right now.
But yes, the NHL had this power. I'd shift the blame from the IIHF to the NHL owners though. At the end of the day Bettman represents them

Maybe in place of the all star game they instead do a divisional round robin tourney. Would help build some of those conference rivalries a little bit.
Everytime his teammates give him shit for being a perimeter player he looks like he's on the verge of tearsPeople who stood out to me:
Boldy, Guentzel, McAvoy
Morrissey, Point
The guy who didn’t seem to make any impact at all even though he played a lot - Mitch Marner. Why would anyone want to pay him a ton of money?
Forget the fighting, what impressed me is the USA forwards seemed like they were committed to playing defense.
It doesn't let Bettman off easy, it was a failure on multiple levels and Bettman should bear the brunt of it.I wasn't talking about Russia this year - obviously it was never an option, the other teams wouldn't have shown up if Russia was invited. But next year it might be an option.
I think that lets Bettman off the hook too easily. He has the power to set the agenda - if he says "we have to do international every couple years, so let's do it our way" then they do it.
Canada has a real goalie?
I can think of a few I like more than Binnington, but I don't think any are that good.
Why wouldn't you do international instead of a mid-season tourney of regular club teams?
That was a 50/50 game that the US won because Connor Hellebuyck is the best goalie in the world. No other way to slice it
Canada said they were going to select a team based off of their season totals and then left Thompson off because of experiences in Vegas. We don't have a Price/Brodeur/Roy/etc anymore but I refuse to believe Binnigton is the best we have to offer
