People complaining about this being a gimmick or a money grab... Yes of course this is. But if you want to make a tournament that is prestigious and meaningful you have to start somewhere. The problem becomes if its like the World Cup a few years ago that was a one off event with two made up teams. And even that tournament produced some good hockey.
I think ideally you'd have a world cup event every 4 years as well as the Olympics. The more international best on best tournaments the better.

Considering all the defencemen drafted high, they are on the verge of developing a crazy good shutdown core if all the players can reach most of their potential.
1996, 2004, and 2016 already happened, the NHL has gone backwards since then blud. It's about control. They (NHL) want revenue streams and won't partner up with IIHF to produce a legitimate World Cup-level tournament because they don't want Europe to be involved. That's why they are only playing four teams even with backlash comments from players like Kopitar, Draisaitl, and Pastrnak.

I'm not your blud, plal. I dont give a shit who hosts the event, just give me best on best hockey. And you reinforced my point. There has been no consistency with the world cup, that's why no one considers it a meaningful. If the NHL wants to do this every 4 years it WILL become legitimate.
And Europe is involved with this tournament. Last I checked half the teams are from Europe. These are the only 4 countries that could legitimately compete with one another (excluding Russia, but that's a whole other issue). I have no interest in seeing Germany or Slovenia get blown out by the big dogs. Leave that for the Olympics.

Haha, I guess my first two sentences came off too strong. I was making a joke. I'm not that invested in this argument. Point is, I'm still excited to watch a best on best tournament even if it is a little gimicky. And the more tournaments like this the better,
