Forward Thinking Thoughts

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Yeah, still crazy. How has he done in your opinion?
Honestly, I'd probably have a better grade than a lot of people on here, even though it's still not a super high grade. He's done some things that have driven me absolutely crazy (I think everybody knows what most of them are), but has also done some shrewd things (JEE contract, Middleton trade), and gotten lucky on occasion (Gustavsson trade, inherited Kaprizov/Boldy). But the whole thing kind of starts and ends with the Parise/Suter situation, and I obviously can't put 100% of that on him. It does seem pretty weird to be like "ok, the clock starts now" after 6 years (buyouts essentially over) but I can actually see a world where it does.

My eye has actually wandered more towards Brackett lately . We need to start seeing some non no-brainer draft picks start to contribute in meaningful ways.

In a vacuum I agree with setting a number with Kaprizov and moving on if he won’t take it, but the reality also is that if you take Kaprizov off this team we’re so far from contending it’s not even funny. Maybe in year one of being a GM who is willing to enter into a rebuild it would be different. Guerin will be in year 8 next year (crazy right?), and Leipold is Leipold. Moving on from Kaprizov and then continuing to try and compete with this roster would be so unserious.
Well, even with Kap we've been pretty far from being serious contenders. At this point, I offer 12-13M long term, and if he doesn't want that, see how far the team goes next year with all the cool new additions and cap space. If we still aren't serious contenders by the TDL, and by that i mean beating the Central teams on a regular basis, as well as whoever is good in the Pacific, then you move Kap. He won't be getting better, and almost surely will be getting worse 3-4 years from now. No way i want to be tied to a 15M contract for the next 8 years, as his play declines and his body deteriorates.

Move Spurge, maybe Brodin. Zucc, too.

The last thing BUF needs is adding another LHD to Dahlin, Power, and Byram, among others. I also think that Thompson is the last forward they should trade.
Brodin is almost exactly what they need. A RHD version would be better but where are they getting that?

BUF doesn't need another LHS d-man. Dahlin, Power, Samuelsson, and Byram are all LHS d-men. Adding Brodin they would be a 5 LHS:1RHS d-man team next year.

Dahlin and Brodin both can and have played a ton of RD. Samuelsson is not good enough to factor into the conversation

There isn’t a RD like Brodin available and almost never is. Brodin hugely improves their blueline regardless of handedness

No he really doesn't, especially considering he can't stay healthy.

The only 4 Wild players BUF should want are Boldy, JEE, Faber, and Kap. Everything else from MN is just stuff MN.

Clearly we do not agree at all. Might wanna take another look at their depth chart. They need help all over

Not really. The Cozens trade opened a hole (arguably he was part of the problem this year) and filled 2 other holes.

Roster for next year under contract or RFA.
???/Tage/Tuch
Zucker/Norris/Petrka (RFA)
Greenway/McLeod (RFA)/Quinn (RFA)
Malenstyn/Krebs/Lafferty

Dahlin/Byram (RFA)
Power/JBD (RFA)
Samulesson/Clifton

BUF needs another top-6 FWD and a Physical RD to balance their top-4 and the goalies not to be awful.

What the Sabres need is Faber, and, to a far lesser extent, Foligno.

Faber for sure.

Boldy, JEE (pushes Tage to wing and fills the PK FWD need), and Kap would all fill a FWD need, but BUF does have some interesting prospects that could shuffle the lineup to offset that need a bit.

I don't really like the Foligno fit with Greenway on the team. It could work, but it would be a very back burner type of move. He would be an upgrade for the bottom-6, PK, and leadership?

I also don't see Rossi as a good fit either. I think he would be a winger with PP2 time in BUF. More of a stopgap player until the GM finds someone they like more (sound familiar).

Faber, Spurgeon, Brodin, Middleton, Chisholm, Hartman, Foligno, Gaudreau, Zuccarello, Rossi all would be welcome additions. Thats just off the top of my head. They have no depth and no veterans.

Brodin could babysit Power and allow them to run Byram-Dahlin as a very good 1st pair. They need hockey players more than RHD. There are about 10 Brodins on the planet, and the RHS ones are worth a fortune and impossible to get.

Thompson is almost 5 years older. i wouldn't, even though i love what TT could bring right now.
He’s also on a sweetheart deal. Maybe I wouldn’t I don’t know. I guess if you think Faber is McAvoy there’s no way you do it.

This sounds like a TOR or EDM fan from years ago trying to shove their crap down everyone else's throat.
-Faber is the only player listed that BUF should make a trade for.
-All the FWDs listed would be on the 3rd line at best in BUF. (Rossi might be a top-6 winger)
-They have less need for LD than when MN had Suter, Brodin, and Scandella on the team.
-Spurgeon would be a fit; but he's old, expensive, can't stay healthy. Retention would be needed to make him an attractive trade target.

Rossi + Brodin is not even close to the 4 quarters for a dollar type deals you are referring to. Heidt + Gaudreau + Lambos + 2nd is the type of deal you are referring to.

They get a decent replacement for Tage and a massive upgrade on their blueline who brings a skillset they desperately need and can play with either of their #1 overall young D.

I’ve been thinking about our picks too. I love how the Rossi/Marat picks might backfire or have backfired on this current regime.

i want kaprizov aka hemi on this team for life, however if he leaves what would be desired draft pick comp? maybe 3-1st; a 2nd, 3-3rds & 3-5ths plus a serviceable player? remember kap will want to go to a winner so the picks won't be very high.

Again Brodin is a LHS d-man, it a square peg round hole fit. Beating it with a bigger hammer doesn't change that fact. The fact that he can't stay healthy doesn't help matters either.

Rossi doesn't fit with BUF in anyway that makes sense. He's a huge downgrade from Tage. Rossi would be a lateral move from BUF's 3C McLeod, just depends if you want the PK center or the PP FWD.

It is also a terrbile cap move for BUF. Tage is ~$7.2m/yr compared to Brodin+Rossi for $11m+/yr.

I think you just hope to get one piece that really helps you. Out of the destinations he would sign with, Florida jumps out to me. I would like to get Lundell + Samoskevich.

This feels like a really underwhelming return for Kaprizov.
