2020, when our once worst fears all feel kind of meh.
At the same time, the possibility this was going to happen during a potential extension is pretty much exactly why we balked at handing him the top end salary he wanted. If forslund slides into this role I will just pretend he matriculated and not that the canes showed him the door. This will help me
In all fairness, I'm sure they saw this as a distinct possibility when doing "negotiations." Obviously I'd kill to keep John for the Canes, but I understand the front office not wanting to shell out big bucks without contingency for a PBP guy who might be picking up a larger national role. If it had been any other season than mid-pandemic it could have likely turned out very differently...lots of odd things are happening this year due to revenue concerns. If forslund slides into this role I will just pretend he matriculated and not that the canes showed him the door. This will help me
Is it a given that he'll slide into the #1 spot?
Apparently someone on Twitter is saying to expect it to be Kenny Albert.

It wouldn't be shocking. I've been saying around here for a couple of years that Forslund isn't a lock for the top job. Kenny has typically done the other Conference Finals games opposite Doc (this year may have been different given John was in the bubble and Doc was working from home). We'll see what happens. It'd be nice for John to get it but I don't think he'll be hurting for NBC airtime.
I wonder if the other sports things really is a big deal. You look at a guy like Joe Buck, and he's doing 7 straight days of NFL games and World Series games. And even when it's the same sport, guys like John or Doc at one point were doing local team games and national games which is a lot. A lot of these guys thrive on those busy schedules. It's also not like if they did select Kenny Albert that he'd be a lock to have a Doc-esque career. This isn't necessarily a "next 10 years" decision, especially seeing as Albert has affinities for other sports as previously mentioned.

I still think John is positioned well even if he doesn't get the big job for now. He won't be hurting for airtime as I said. He has already been doing a ton of games and is currently open to doing as many as are available. Hopefully, his worst-case scenario is to step into the #2 role and at least get a permanent role in the Conference Final.
No... but I would like it for himIs it a given that he'll slide into the #1 spot?
Yeah - this works against Forslund. If the NHL disappears from NBC, Albert has other uses.Whoever wins the job probably has only a short time before they are probably having to interview again. My guess is one of the other networks will outbid a complacent NBC.

Of course, I imagine Forslund would want an out in the contract in case the NHL is picked up by another outlet. And NBC might give it to him, since they'd really lose nothing if they let him walk. He's the best in hockey, in my opinion, but he is really just a hockey guy (and I mean that as a positive - I don't ever want to see him on another sport broadcast, or MC'ing some shit dance off show or the like), with no use on any of their other properties. Well, except for the olympics - but I'd bet if the league is on another network then NBC's coverage will be buried on some 5th tier network they own.

I was thinking the Olympic Channel or maybe they put hockey on Telemundo Deportes, but you make a mighty strong point.5th tier NBC network...so NBCSN without NHL games.
You bring up a good point. I wonder if the NHL would try and pull what the NFL does and have Eastern Conference games on one national channel and Western Conference games on another. And maybe with the end goal of getting it to the point where you split it 4 ways with each division getting their own national broadcaster. And then let everyone bid against each other (or set up a rotation) for the Stanley Cup Finals.I still think the NHL tries to end up on multiple national stations, like NBC and ESPN. It'd then be a matter of who ponies up to get the SCF.
Wrong forum.I just realized we ended worse than Sex and the City.
