Forslund contract negotiations

Ouch. I know she's excited for Abby, but that seems a little tone deaf given the Forslund situation.

Sometimes, the beat reporters spend so much time processing these issues that they drift ahead of the curve on what the rest of us are thinking about. Sarah may have been resigned to John's departure weeks/months earlier than the general fanbase, and is probably totally over thinking about it by now.

Failing to notice the headline "I'll never get over it" two days prior is pretty bad, though...

Is she taking over Mike’s role? Shane taking Mike’s role and then she gets Shane’s role?

I'm not sure actually. I only got to see a couple of playoff games from Fox Sports here in the UK. It was mostly NBC. My impression was that she was the 'host' and effectively the 'Mike' of the duo.

Regardless, her joining the broadcast team permanently is the news.

On a side note, I occasionally listen to 99.9 the fan when in the car in the mornings, but haven't turned it on in months, until the other day. I had no idea that Golic and Wingo were no longer the ESPN morning show. I didn't listen to them enough to care one way or another, but I did a search to find out what the scoop was. Apparently, before the Pandemic, Wingo told ESPN he no longer wanted to get up that early for the show. Then the Pandemic hits, and rather than find a new host, ESPN axes the show all together and because of the pandemic, there was no longer a spot for Wingo so he was let go (contract not renewed). I guess timing is everything.

Golic, OTOH, must still be under contract because the moved him to doing color analyst for college games, which is clearly a big step down. Apparently, ESPN must be run by Dundon because Golic found out about it while on vacation from the media.

I knew about the morning show fall-out from reading stories. I think Golic tried to reunite with Greenberg and per Golic's wife there were no takers at ESPN.

Wingo would be a good pickup for any of the other networks broadcasting the NFL. NBC as the studio host as Tirico transitions to replace Michaels seems obvious to me.

ESPN has been mismanaged for years. They have been like 3 AAF Dundons rolled into one. Well overpaying for most of the events they have covered. I think they bid double what Fox did to get the college playoffs. ESPN has been trying to find ways to cut money ever since. It doesnt help that ESPN has lost a ton of viewers and cable subscribers over the last 5 years. I saw where 2019-2020 ESPN is down 62%. Getting political isnt helping them, at all. Last Dance was a big, but short boost for ratings. MNF football viewership, which ESPN paid heavily for, is down from last year.

We could see ESPN get a lot more Dundon like and cut all these extra shows and expensive personalities as they continue to bleed money. I used to be a get up and watch sportscenter every morning kind of guy when Stuart Scott and company where on there (cool as the other side of the pillow) but, I dont remember the last time I have watched a sports center segment. It went down hill and I stopped watching.

edit: some conflicting reports on MNF ratings. CNBC is saying down 17%, ESPN is saying there are up from last year.

I really miss what ESPN was, a Sportscenter-focused channel that was a way for me to get the highlights of all the major games from the day before. I just don't care about the people that are talking about Lebron most of the time.

Summer breaks when I didn't have school I'd watch Sportscenter from when I woke up until like noon, even though it wasn't live at that time. Now you gotta get up early to even see it because they throw to Stephen A and Max yelling at each other pretty early. SC is the place where new talent cuts their teeth instead of a sign that you've "arrived". I get why they think the shift to talk shows might make sense, as anyone can Google highlights, but the fact that it was a great "background" show (like syndicated sitcoms) meant it was always on my TV. I don't seek out highlights for the Mariners/A's game, but I'll watch them if they're on! Even SC itself has shifted away from showing as many highlights as possible now, and is so much more focused on "analysis" segments that mostly suck.

I think a lot of us probably used to throw on Sportscenter and just let it run. But even if they went back to that format, there's almost no point with the availability of highlights on various forms of media and social media. I can get a little nostalgic for those old SC days, but it's nice not to have to sit around and watch an entire hour of whatever they deem important to find the highlights of games you actually care about.

I cut the cable years ago at my old house and didn't have access to ESPN. In fairness, other than NFL highlights way back, I rarely watched ESPN anyhow (and now those highlights are all over the internet anyhow). I did sign up for Sling for a couple of months just to watch "the Dance" and it was well worth it IMO, but got rid of it right after that was over.

At my new house, the neighborhood provides cable as part of the HOA fees so I have ESPN, but rarely turn it on. I haven't watched much TV for a long time though. Our TV is rarely on during the day as we are always doing something else. We'll turn it on before dinner sometimes to catch the news and we'll watch a movie on Amazon Prime or I'll watch a hockey game and my wife will watch some HGTV from time to time, but that's about it.

At our farm up north, we have no TV or internet and we usually spend about 12+ weeks up there during the spring/summer/fall (not all at once) so we don't watch any TV then.

SC was in it's golden age in the 90's...Kilborn, Olbermann, Patrick, Eisen, Cohn, Mayne, Levy, etc. It was a perfect show for a particular demographic. Then in the 2000's the wheels came off. Such a shame.

I get the point about highlights being available on the internet now...but I still think there's a spot for a well produced highlight show with knowledgable/humorous anchors.

ESPN+ has NFL Primetime. Still love the music and Berman...and now no commercials.

Personally I always found his morning show absolutely insufferable to begin with. If it wasn't dealing with Notre Dame, New York sports, Tebus, or LeBron they weren't going to cover it... all things I give exactly zero f***s combined about

Mike and Mike was a great show - because the two often disagreed, very respectfully, with each other. Greenberg was the nerdy journalist who’d covered sports for a few decades; and Golic was the jock, and kind of the perfect one, not a star but one who you could say “toiled.” A journeyman, so to speak. The great thing about the show was, Greenie knew when to say “man...I never played, but I have to think it was *this* way...” and Golic would say “well you’re wrong” and it would be agree to disagree.

With Golic and Wingo, Trey gave you the vibe that despite never playing anything, he was an expert on everything. And he was vehement in his opinions on everything. Way too much faux-ness with Trey.

And then there was Golic Jr. My god. 490 words to ask a question of a guest, where the answer was yes or no.

It sucks that Golic is off of mornings. The current show (Keyshawn, Jay Williams and the host) is pretty bad so far ... they agree with each other 99% of the time. There’s no diverging viewpoints. And of course they all lean one way. I’m not asking for max vs Stephen A, that is godawful in its own way ... but three guys nodding their heads for 4 hours isn’t really entertaining or informative.

Yep. Greenie and Golic were a good pair. I never understood why they broke up -- grass is greener kind of thing, I guess. It was bad for both of them.

But that was my morning commute, and I haven't had a morning commute in a long time now, so. :)
