So, he just thought he couldn’t beat out the competition here? Reminds me of an old saying, “whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right”.

I dunno. It sounds like a well crafted response as he was complimentary to both the Sharks (in particulare, Todd Marchant) and Ducks (PV). At least it's confirmed that Todd Marchant was a reason for him to go to the Sharks.

is always what I remember about that game for some reason haha

Somehow Chris Phillips was a 1st overall pick back in the day, man some of those 90s drafts were so lean. Ottawa's defense wasn't that impressive that year, I guess Redden was good but he wasn't a factor in the finals. They also weren't that deep - They were much better the year before IMO. Very disappointing coaching from Bryan Murray in the 06 playoffs for them.

I feel like losing Hasek really screwed them that year. Was pretty surprised to see them in the final the year after vs the Ducks. Everyone seemed certain sabres were the team to beat but we never got the sabres / ducks series

Agreed, their rematch the next year was a pretty big upset but the other way around. Chara was a big loss as well, I don't think Redden was somebody who could lead a defense into battle as "the guy." The Sens dmen just had no answers for our forwards and their forwards had no answers for our dmen. I still think the Sens made a mistake trading Hossa for Heatley, Hossa was a much tougher player to play against especially in the playoffs. Hossa was already an elite offensive winger in his own right and great defensively.

I remember a lot of the hockey media and other fans didn't think the Ducks had a chance because of the relatively easy time Ottawa had getting to the finals and the Ducks "never had seen a line like the "CASH" line. Somehow the hockey pundits (see The Hockey News) forgot that some of them picked the Ducks to win it all after the Ducks got Pronger and at the start of the season, but Ducks fans knew the CASH line never saw a team defense lead by S. Niedermayer and Pronger and a shutdown line like the Moen-Pahlsson-R. Niedermayer line, not to mention having Jiggy (and Bryz) in net. That team had it all: defense, goaltending, skill, grit. They could play against any type of team and beat them.

I also did an analysis of the playoff teams. And although the Ducks were third (I think) in points at the end of the regular season, they had the best record and the most number of points head-to-head against the other 15 playoff teams. I wish I saved the spreadsheet.

phillips and volchenkov were one of the better defensive pairings in the league for a minute there. he had a pretty solid career when all was said and done. just an under the radar guy due to being a stay at home d-man

He was fine but his draft position was purely a function of the draft quality.

Yeah, Detroit would have beat Ottawa too. Lidstrom/Schneider/Kronwall.
Ducks lost Pronger for 16 games during regular season when he got injured, they could have had the most points in the west if that didn't happen. 66 games played and he still had 59 points.
