Injuries definitely played a role but in his draft year there was some belief that his decline in offensive production was due to Etem leaving.

I don't know what happened to him. I think somewhere he definitely lost his passion which was a plus trait for him.
Oh sure, I don't know that there's ever been a lot of genuine doubt that he wasn't a top-5 level player or whatever, and Etem was a really very good junior player, but even if you ignore his D-1, Shinkaruk's reduced draft year production of like 1.3PPG/0.6GPG is still likely putting him in the first round, and he had a very good showing a few months later in training camp. I think he was a pretty adequately rated player.

I'm not quite sure what you mean so I might be misinterpreting what you said here. Are you saying Shinkaruk was a top 5 talent and there weren't a lot of genuine doubt about it?

IIRC, Shinkaruk's ranking and projection was all over the map so I'm not sure what "pretty adequately rated player" means. To be fair, I'm not saying he wasn't a 1st round talent. There's a huge difference between a potential top 5 player who drops in the draft and a player projected to go somwhere between 15-30. A #24 pick busting isn't a big deal in many drafts.

Probably a bad sign that Canada needs a 2008 draftee vs a 2018 one. Figured the roster would be all guys that they’d consider for 2026. Dobson apparently hasn’t had the best season.

Chicago got 2 firsts, Moore and boisvert for Hagel, but darn he’d look good with Bedard.

I think that a lot of the rankings that had him so high were influenced by his big pre-draft year, and while that's an impressive season at that age regardless of who he was playing with, I don't know that many NHL teams were going to be taking that as gospel. I think he was generally considered a mid-to-late rounder, and I believe that was still probably an accurate assessment.
