Watched a few shifts the other day and can confirm there's still zero commitment to the two-way game. It's quite remarkable how clueless he is in the defensive zone.

He will probably will get one more look by an NHL team, but really needs to be situated on an elite team with guys that can pick up the slack. He has the skill to be a lethal finisher. Maybe Edmonton or Tampa sign him?

Both. We are calling Sherwood Burrows lite rn which is such a huge compliment to Sherwood

When we traded Podkolzin, he was either on par or below Sprong, Hoglander, Bains, Sherwood, Karlsson, Bains, PDG on the winger depth chart.

And that's without mentioning the sure fire guys like Joshua, Boeser, Garland, Heinen, DeBrusk who had claimed 5/6 of the top nine winger roles.

Trading or committing to him &/or Hoglander was a decision they absolutely had to make early, and I think they made the right one with Podkolzin, but I thought they should have traded Hoglander before the season as well. I still disagree with MS that riding it out without an extension was a FAR better decision. There wasn't much downside from a trade aspect -> we're seeing it now, teams still want Hoglander.

The Podkolzin trade preceded the Joshua diagnosis

Karlsson was better than Podkolzin in the coaches eyes.

Bains didn’t show he was better last year, but his performance this year has been better than what Podkolzin showed last year. Podkolzin had flatlined and Bains had upward trajectory — even if the ceiling is limited.

I don’t know. Sometimes players work in different places. It very obviously wasn’t going to work here. He needed a change of scenery. Edmonton is giving him a billion games with two top five players … obviously the puck is going to go in.

At least that many points. Podkolzin has played 2/3rd of his minutes with Draisatl. He's on pace for 27 points playing with one of the top 10 players in the league.

This inspired me to look at the numbers.. Podkolzin is 4th on the OIlers in ES points/60 for forwards.

He would be 10th on the Canucks. Kiefer Sherwood would be #1 on the Oilers, ahead of McDavid and Draisatl.

Remember when the Oilers loaded up on soft wingers in the offseason so they'd be an unstoppable offensive juggernaut?

I was surprised to see Hunter Shinkaruk playing here in the UK with the Cardiff Devils. He played a few shifts and then got injured. He has been MIA from all team functions that they do with the fans. So not sure actually where he is right now

I had such high hopes for that kid, turned out he was a flash in the pan although he never really was the same after his injuries.

I had such high hopes for that kid, turned out he was a flash in the pan although he never really was the same after his injuries.

He was probably just overrated (as in he really wasn't a top 10 talent who fell in the draft due to his size). Like Schroeder there were signs in his draft year that maybe we weren't drafting a superstar.

IIRC, his skating was never as dynamic after his hip surgery, and he couldn't overcome that with his size. I think he also might have been another one of the young guys around that time who was told to bulk up a whole bunch, but I could be misremembering.

The injury happened early in his D+1 (and IIRC, it ended up coming out that he'd exacerbated an injury he'd been playing on since before he was drafted, and then stupidly kept playing on it to try to make the WJHC club), so there's not really much to gauge as to whether his draft status was due to him being overrated. You wonder how his career plays out if they'd opted to keep him for 9 games instead of bringing in Dalpe to fill the roster spot he was holding at the end of training camp.

Injuries definitely played a role but in his draft year there was some belief that his decline in offensive production was due to Etem leaving.

I don't know what happened to him. I think somewhere he definitely lost his passion which was a plus trait for him.
