While he did have a genuinely good final playoff run with us, in the big picture he was already washed at that point. It'd leave a shitty taste in everyone's mouth if he returned here, imo.

God those goals were so special. The winner against Montreal was soul crushing for them. It was an absolute treat to get revenge on them. The winner against Detroit totally changed things imo. It felt like they hit a new level of belief at that point. Even though we lost in the final, that run helped our guys so much and I'm glad Johnson got to be a part of it all.
Id welcome him back simply for the fact that he can't be worse than Atkinson or Sheary. If anything, he's a depth piece for 8-10mins in a playoff game where he likely won't f*** something up.

Yeah that buzzer beater is an all time Lightning moment. Not saying it's bigger than winning the Cup or anything. Just that it is REALLY hard to top as a singular moment. It's not much different than Lecavalier just ripping the Capitals f***ing hearts out with a cold blooded snipe in OT
That and taking 3 dudes in the corner to set Fedotenko up for the Cup winner vs Calgary were his "Michael Jordan" moments
Yeah he had that monster game against Detroit when it looked like our season was over. If I'm not mistaken he scored the tying goal and then the OT winner.
He also scored some timely goals in the cup runs. At the time he left his contract was just way too big for him to live up to. It seems like he might not even be a league min player anymore, but it's low risk on a guy who might have a couple drops left in the tank. If it's gonna happen anywhere, it's gonna be here under Cooper.

It's really sad to think that both TJ's Conn Smythe campaign in 2015 and, as it turned out, his entire career trajectory were ruined by Brent Seabrook breaking his wrist. There's a before-and-after to his career from that point forward; nobody thought during 2014-'15 that it would end up being his best season in the NHL.

Yeah his 2021 season was not great, but he saved his best for last against Price. 2 goals, 4 points in 5 games

He was never the same. When we talk about guys "leaving it all on the ice," that 2015 run from Johnson is it. That was the peak of his career and the injuries kept his from ever getting close to that again.

Oh yeah. They couldn't wait to get rid of him. But you're right about this and I don't know if this is him taking the right step to rectify years of being a bozo or if the bozo gene went nuclear. The Canucks straight up traded their captain to make Miller happy and gave captaincy to Hughes.
To be a fly on the wall in that locker room man...

The guys he had issues with were all underperforming, look at Horvat vs Miller, singing Miller was by far the better decision for the franchise, Horvat is not an 8.5M guy and will never live up to that contract. Petterson just signed an 11.6M contract and has been playing at 60 point pace for almost 80 games now. Who does he get along with best? The guys like him who live up to their cap hits or better, Boeser and Hughes.
Can't see how you watch that interview and say he hasn't matured, he came from veteran playoff teams that really shaped him to a young and immature Canucks team. He listed a bunch of Rangers veterans he respected and in other interviews he's spoken the same way about the Tampa guys, he's tried to bring that focus to the Canucks room.
I remember when Andrew Ferrence went to the Oilers from Cup winning Bruins and he called out the immature locker room, everyone was just like "l0l Ferrence" and yeah he ended being 100% right. Buffalo to an extent is having the same issue, bunch of young talent with no direction.

McLelland has a pretty good record, all things considered. He can get teams to the playoffs, and manages to stick around on teams for a few years, which apparently is sort of an unusual skill now.
He was also an assistant coach for Detroit under Babcock.

DRW barely fire guys mid-season (years of success had something to do with it).
It's weird that when we're focusing so much on the analytical side of the game, the coaches who make all of that work don't seem to get the same look.
Detroit is like Buffalo. Sure, they could hire Gerard Gallant (who played for the Wings), and he might be able to do something with them in a year or two, but what happens when his methods have worn out their welcome? What real coaching development pipeline has been set up?
