It's happening far too often to ignore.

I feel and pray for his family right now. Can't imagine seeing your son/brother/etc dropping in game like that on TV.

On CNN, a medical expert says with almost certainty it was a commotio cordis event
Damn. Looking at hit again Higgins right shoulder pad looks to make contact with the heart region.
Usually you would think a direct object like a stick or puck or baseball would do something like that. Scary!

They were at the game - his mother rode with him in the ambulance. Horrific, just so terrible

Yes, to me, it looked like the Bengals player's helmet hit his chest area square. The way the doctor on CNN explained it, commotio cordis from blunt force trauma caused the heart to quiver, disrupted the cardiac rhythm and unable to pump blood. Blood pressure throughout the body drops to zero. It takes about 6 seconds for the person to react from the trauma going into cardiac arrest. It was about the same length of time Hamlin got hit, got up and collapsed.

I hope he is the 58 percent that makes it thru. This is really terrible. Reading that even chest protection offers minimal protection. Maybe something can be developed with some measure of effectiveness to help prevent this IDK

I'm hearing after Hamlin was taken off the field, the refs were going up to the coaches to tell them they were giving them 5 minutes for the players to loosen up to resume playing, and both McDermott and Taylor told the refs to piss off.

That's when they called the league.

zero percent his fault!!!! zero! but I wonder how Tee Higgins feels right now.

My mind immediately went back to the Chris Pronger play when he took the slapshot to the chest & his heart stopped. Scary situation back then. Hope this kid pulls through.

Sports like football and hockey are unfortunately not long for this modern society. Significant changes are going to be made if this young man dies.
I understand your point but as dangerous as football and hockey are consider boxing and MMA. One sport I cant watch is bare knuckle fighting especially the women.

He was down a long time. If he comes out of this and lives a normal life after this it'll be a miracle.
They key is they started on CPR very quickly to get blood flow returning to his vitals. Obviously not a great situation, but the longer the vitals go without that O2 the more long term risk there is.

.

I knew a teenage kid who was unresponsive for a long time with no professional care. He did have some brain damage and a long rehab but leads a normal life with wife, kids and job.

I read that bare knuckle fighting is actually safer than boxing, even though it is bloodier.

With bare knuckle boxing, your fingers and knuckles will get bruised and swollen as the fight progresses, so even if a fighter gets that second wind, the punches thrown won't have the same impact.

People use it as a joke, but there is a reason why boxers fought in a stance like this:

Landing punches to the face/head hurts.

With boxing, you add copious amounts of tape and then you put on a glove. Boxers increase the surface area of their fists which in turn makes knockouts easier to achieve than the bare knuckled folks.

I can not comment on any scientific data but I have seen some bareknuckle ladies faces beat to a pulp. I can't watch that. Not that the MMA gloves offer much protection. They do not. At least with MMA if getting killed by fists you can try to wrestle.

Understood, but it's better news than the alternative reports that were circulating around last night. Not that I took them as gospel, but they sounded extremely grim. The fact that his vitals were normalized lends some hope. And I'm not in any way talking about his football career...It would be great if he can just walk out of the hospital on his own.

The gloves are worn to protect the fighter's hands, meaning they can throw the same intense punch no matter the round, even punches to the head.

Make a fist and place it under your chin. Now, put on a MMA glove or a boxing glove and do the same. You will notice your fist now has more surface area, meaning that knockout blow can come easier AND, again, if you have the stamina, you can land serious murderous rights and left hooks from hell no matter when in the fight.
