Good call, but I would try to make reservations if you can wherever you go, as it can get quite busy, and then you and you dad won't have to wait in a line.

That hotdog price is even harder to take, when you can get one that's far better at Costco for a 1.50.:(
Does one need a reservation at Costco to get that 1.50 hot dog? Or anything from their concession stand. Anytime I even think about getting somethng at any Costco theres a big lineup, a slow moving lineup, and all the tables are full and covered in ketchup and the floor looks worse than a McDonalds.

I'd have an easier chance of winning the lottery than finding a Costco not overflowing at the seams. Not even Sh Pk one is a safe bet anymore. The traffic from Edmonton is palpable. I think more Edmontonians shop at that location, or the Leduc one than anybody that resides there. Costco has a real strange location concept. lets just have one store on the entire southside in the fastest growing suburb found anywhere in Canada.

heh, another Costco rant.

It’s a shame that Coliseum Steak & Pizza didn’t open up a location nearby Rogers.

If a person wants to try something a little more fancy, I recommend Sofra. Hidden gem and highly rated. One of my favourites and walking distance. One tip, make a reservation ahead of time and plan to be there for an hour or longer. Ain’t no fast food:

Used to regularly go to Coliseum Steak and Pizza as well. Tradition started when the Oilers were in the WHA. I never really got the argument that theres no pregame meal places around that one can go to before game. 118ave is full of them, and you can park anywhere for free, and get affordable meals. What a crock of shit that having a DT arena was going to be uber better and all kinds of options. yeah, like paying 30bucks for parking and having mostly expensive options around for dining or shlock like Boston Pizza or Joeys.

We may need an OT thread titled Costco sucks
I guess I’m a Costco snob

I ain’t gonna fill up on samples, if I did I wouldn’t leave my cart in the middle of the lane blocking off other shoppers

I ain’t gonna stand in line for a hot dog either
Or wait in a huge lineup for gas

Why do you need to check my cart at the end? Another frikken lineup.

And the returns line, buyer remorse, shame shame impulse purchasers.

And whomever designed those parking lots should shred their MBA….end of rant

Yes, there is a lineup for hotdogs (and the other offerings) at Costco. But we're comparing this to the arena. Are there not lineups there for the $8 hotdogs as well? For the record, I've never waited in that Costco food lineup for more than 5-10 minutes tops.

Agreed, they need another store on the southside. I believe someone stated that the existing one is the busiest one in the city, and maybe even the province.

Never have a problem with parking there. The thing I like most is that the parking stalls are oversized, so plenty of room to maneuver.

Agreed on the idiots that leave their carts in the middle of the aisle so they can feed their kids, grandma and grandpa and the uncles and aunts.

Don't mind the lineup to get the cart checked. Again, I think the most I've ever waited is about a minute. And even that is during the busiest times.

The gas lineups are stupid and I've never been in line for any of them, so a non issue for me.

The Southside Costco at one time was the 4th busiest Costco in North America. That was way back, probably got worse since. Its a given its the busiest location in the Province.

In the Winter it was a drag trying to push a shopping cart through two blocks of snow to get to where your car is parked. The only place I've ever had to park further away is WEM at say Christmas shopping time.

I could never see the sense in waiting 30 minutes in line and idling and shutting off to save a cent a litre on gas. I only ever got gas there if there weren't big lineups.

Much better options outside the Arena. Do yourself a favor and have pregame meal before arriving at Arena. Options are numerous and already mentioned. I would avoid the restos at the adjacent casino. Just not good value and not good either.

Marriot has some solid options. Brazen for instance. Chop is a decent place and connected with pedway. Boston Pizza is the inexpensive meal. Lux is solid. Joeys is popular with younger folk.

Make sure you're sufficiently watered pregame as well. Drink prices at Rogers START around 15bucks just for beer. They go up from there. You could get a few drinks anywhere else for the price.

Paid $30 for bacon and eggs the other day for breakfast, ROFL. Brazen....aptly named. ;)

Tips should never be required or asked.
I give a tip because I choose too, when you ask for a tip, I will give a second thought in coming back to the venue.
The business should be paying their employees enough that they shouldn't be asking for a tip.
A tip is only there if good business and good customer service is present in the transaction.
Rule of thumb: Don't tip if you're not getting table service. Everything else is basically just fast food prep.

Not gonna lie, these weren't the responses that I expected. I guess I figured that with all the money spent on the new arena there'd be at least a couple good options for supper. Glad I asked! I'll pass it on to dad and we can find something outside the facility. Thanks guys.
DOSC is a few blocks away and has some pretty good food, great cocktails and nice decor.

heh. Yeah. Most of these DT places are inflated prices. Theres another place in the Marriot that is better for Breakfast, forget the name of it. Braven is more for dinner, but still beware the prices. Ruth Chris is the worst, in my opinion.

I don't really go to these types of places too often.

Not sure if people remember but decades ago there were food options around like Mother Tuckers. You would get your meal with great huge salad bar. Waldens was also around but on the pricey side. Several steak places etc. I think the Restaurant scene in the 70's or 80's was better.

Waldens was great. One of our go to places, along with Between Friends and David’s on the south side. A lot of the players used to frequent David’s as well.

Small world. Probably seen you at Between Friends. Great spot. Wife and I loved the food there. Wasn't much to look at on the outside but inside it was nice and the food was great. Remember the Duck salad with roasted duck, mandarin, almonds, bacon, in a creamy vinaigrette dressing? Stuff like that and the deserts kept us coming back. Most places didn't spend as much effort on appetizers. Between Friends did. Went to Davids often enough as well. Solid place. Honestly thought Between Friends was better, and more of a couple place.

Between Friends to me was kind of a timeless spot, and more reserved and quiet. We thought Davids was kind of trendy and noisy. Different atmosphere.

There was another Millwoods hang out in Milbourne before that area went sideways. It was in a strip mall but it was a decent restaurant. Can't remember the name.

Anybody remember the Corkscrew Restaurants. There was one on 142st and one on North side. Nice restos, good decor, decent menu which was like Mother Tuckers. They had elaborate Medieval type decor, suits of armor as decoration all over. Places like that which were interesting to go to fell out of flavor. The atmosphere of present establishments is so generic.

David’s for sure had a bit of a busier vibe, but that was part of the appeal. You never knew who you were going to run into on any given day. We went to Between Friends quite often, and always requested the same waiter, and he knew what we drank, and had the drinks at the table the moment we arrived. Used to drink Zombies back then, can’t imagine the headache I’d get if I even tried one today. :)

But a lot of times it was in the quieter spots that you'd end up meeting people.

One Sunday evening, would have been around 88, The wife and I decide on Boccalinos downtown. Was a decent pasta dishes spot. Homemade pasta and quality cheeses kind of thing. It was very quiet. Only two other tables of diners and one of them was Craig MacTavish with his special other. We kind of just waved, nodded. I don't like to impose on celebs. Used to run into Dave Semenko all the time at a Subway in Millwoods. Just north of MWTC. He must have lived around there. Most of the Oilers I've met have been at Gas stations. lol. Everybody needs gas.

The Library Lounge at University used to be nice and it and a few other places on campus back then were a hit with certain Oilers. They were obviously in search of co-eds, lets just say.

Davids was excellent for simple quality food, and one of the best for breakfast. Always liked Smitty's for breakfast too when the kids were small. I remember the Corkscrew, I think it was in the Oliver area, was it not? Celebrated my 21 birthday at Waldens, a lovely place. I still remember the giant comfy chairs they had. Between Friends was usually great, too. Nicest restaurant I've ever been in, in Edmonton, was the Carvery, in the Westin Hotel.

Here's some other ones you may remember.

The Grinder
Sha Na Na's
Dancin' Shoes
Denny Andrews Great American Bar
Tin Lizzie's
Crackerjack
The Tin Palace
Esmeraldas
Club Malibu
The Embers
The Purple Lantern
The Beachcomber
Chez Pierre's
Victor's
Lucifer's
Anthony's
The Gaspump
Old Bailey
The Centre Club
Cosmos
The Peoples Pub
The Boiler Lounge
Mama Theresa's
Mother Tuckers
The Purple Onion
Trapper John's
The Executive
The George and Dragon
Jesters

Id assume your not coming for the food but the experience, so i would suggest you go check out Studio 99

Its bar food with a bit of an up twist but they have Gretzky memorabilia on display as well as pre gram show with Bob (630 CHED) probably your best stop for the overall "hockey Experience"

The Corkscrew was on 142nd street and Stony Plain road. I remember it well. Went there a fair amount . Once also worked around there so would frequent for lunch.

Wasn't the other one listed the Purple Onion? I remember all the above except for Mother Theresas. Never heard of that except in the Catholic sense..must have been an exciting place. ;)

Carmelos was another one that was around 124st Kind of another romantic spot that had a scented lit fountain and elaborate decor.

One that hasn't been mentioned was on campus. I think it was La Casa Ticino. great italian place. It was in an old beautiful two level house and tables on every floor, packed.

Chez Pierre and Mother Theresa on the same list. I'm trying not to merge those thoughts. haha.

Hey I didn't write the list.

This is in the too much information category but one of my first exposures to exposure was the former "Billy's Guide" which was an Edmonton entertainment periodical (monthly) that my parents would bring home and leave laying around. They had um, interesting pictorial advertisements for the peeler bars. Unfortunately I was 10 and couldn't get into these establishments..;)

So I was going over food policies of several pro sports orgs and arena and stadia and several, particularly in the US allow their patrons to bring in food to games, thus respecting their patrons. Most of these not even requiring the food to be dietarily specific. Just that its properly contained.

But in going over some stuff I stumbled on this;

So to wit you are allowed to bring Cannabis into the arena but not smoke it. But you are forbidden to bring FOOD of any kind into the arena. They hint at possible dietary exceptions but apparently determined on a case basis.

I mean who brings Cannabis into a dark concert and doesn't smoke it? You can do that apparently. but no food.

Figure out how the parameters are arranged. They don't sell drugs and cannabis in the arena so feel free to bring those in. But hey food, thats bloody contraband, hand it over because we want you to pay our exorbitant prices on food.

its lol world.

I mean imagine this in contrast to say the 70's. Go to a concert, get searched, they find a bag. At best its confiscated and you're refused entry. At worst you're arrested for possession and will have a record for decades.

2022, Toronto. "Oh whats that" Oh its only Cannabis, we thought it could be carrots or trail mix, we confiscate all food, we allow people to bring in cannabis here sir please bring in your nice fragrant weed, please enjoy the event". heh

The rules are strange.

Wow. Looks like gouging fans during hard times is a bad idea. People are about to be shocked at how poor ticket sales have been going this offseason.

Just look at the Buffalo game, game 3 for how many tickets havent' been sold. Just a guesstimate from looking at seat map that fully HALF of the upper tier is unsold. They are blue, unsold. We're not talking resales, we're talking unsold. Thousands of tickets unsold.

Even for the home opener, which always sells out hundreds of tickets available with game only hours away.

In my season ticket group, when we did our draft, the Buffalo game is always amongst the last games picked. It's always been kind of a dog. No surprise that there's still plenty of seats remaining.
As for the home-opener, when you play the same team in the home opener for the frickin' FORTH year in a row, it really starts to lose it's luster. In our group nobody wanted the open until about half the games were already selected! lol

Aren't there usually giveaways and such in the opener? I don't mean the ones on the ice. ;)

NHL goofed it good though. Silly as stupid having only 2 games on tap on whole long weekend and then season starts on Tuesday. its as if the league doesn't even know Canada or Canadian Thanksgiving exist.

For the last 10 yrs or so, the giveaway's have rotated between a t-shirt one year, or a scarf the following year. With all these items plastered in tacky scotiabank advertising.
