My problem with Quitter is that on draft night he was happy with being selected by the Flyers and came on with the born to be a Flyers schtick. Then a year or so later he’s refusing to ever sign there. Going into the draft the Flyers needed a 1C or a potential top pairing D. Evidently he convinced the Flyers that he was their guy so they passed on Jiricek. If he’d been honest with the Flyers, they’d have taken Jiricek and resolved a hole in their defense. That makes their player acquisition strategy post draft until today totally different.
He screwed over the club in many ways. Briere & Co. Have every reason to be upset with him and his act. He’ll be a marked man for a long time. Probably other organizations have a black mark on him as well. A player can have all of the talent in the world but if they lack character, they’re not worth any investment. Quitter will do stuff like this again. It’s in his DNA. As Bill Russell’s Father once said, “Some people will let you down even if they have to die doing it.”
Or hear me out, maybe the Flyers organization did something to warrant him changing his mind.

This organization hasn’t exactly been ran very well of late.

In your mind, what could they have *realistically* done to cause him to be the first 1st round pick since Kevin Hayes in 2010 not sign?

An infinite amount of things with this organization. You follow them so you know how incompetent they are.

He could have seen how Tortorella handles himself, the ELC thing, front office "chaos", the organization continuing to be irrelevant for over a decade now, etc.

They're all guesses on my part but they're also things that i'd be looking at myself if I was in his situation.

Lets say it was one of those things...flimsy.. but i'll play along.

Do any of them also warrant shutting the team out completely for over a year?

If it actually was bonus overages, that’s really embarrassing. How do you not have money for who you were touting as your next big star? It’s negligible money compared to signing a 4th line plug veteran.

I almost don’t believe that. The Flyers are usually overly generous with contracts.

Actually, I am very impressed by Briere. I think that the era of GMs being doofuses might be over. The Provorov trade was a slick one. It also was necessary. This trade of Gauthier gets support from me as well. Briere got it done at the right time before it became an issue that could be exploited by other organizations. With both of these transactions, the return was pretty impressive. Not all has gone perfectly, see the Sanheim-Krug mess, but things are on the upswing. Of course DB’s predecessor was so bad, most anyone would shine in comparison.

If the representatives are to be believed, they had communication with the Flyers organization.

But let's say they did shut out the Flyers... if they informed the Flyers that he doesn't plan on signing then they also have no reason to talk to anyone from the Flyers organization. Gauthier also isn't obligated to talk to people like LeClair and Sharp just because they show up at one of his games.

I think you answered your question in your own post.

No one is obligated to talk to anyone, but its still classless in this scenario.

Why though? In this scenario he told them he's not signing with them and went on to reject any communication. The Flyers are the ones that are imposing themselves on Gauthier at that point when he wants nothing to do with them. Why should he show them respect?

Regarding the Sharp and LeClair thing, we have no idea but did they show up unannounced? Did he have somewhere else to be? There could be any number of things that makes that situation not as egregious as it seems.

Agreed. I talk to every Jehovas witness and Power Windows ans Siding guy that knocks on my door. Even after I tell them I'm not interested.

Lol I think you know thats comparing apples and battle tanks. The Jehovas Witnesses and Power Windows salespeople havent invested anything in you.

If you dont think professionalism and decorum has a place in hockey anymore, thats your prerogative. Just seems like bending over backwards to blame the Flyers, despite the evidence, because how disenchanted you are with them.

What evidence? Because Briere said that he blew them off?

We're not making any progress on this, so best to move on. You know im not one to go round and round on one topic. Id rather be in the Quackverse thread.

What evidence? Thay they've revved up their media machine to make ypu think they rolled our the carpet for this guy and he ignored them?

It's also funny to me that you're saying decorum doesn't matter when Cutter is doing the one thing that was always a hockey staple: not talking bad about your organization, airing provate business publicly, etc, ans you're saying it makes him look guilty.

If you want it both ways ao you can justify disliking a player that didn't want to be here, have at it. I just think you (general)are being naive if you think a top 5 pick just randomly did an about face 18 months after being drafted for no real reason.

50 years of going nowere...

Cutter ceasing all communication with the Flyers after the World Championships isnt an aspect of the story being disputed by anyone.
I'll leave this as the last response as you said you didn't want to go round and round but Gauthier's representatives said that they talked with the Flyers in Colorado in December and in Sweden last week or so.

Briere said they had no communication with Gauthier's camp.
