Hmm, young teams tend to be highly inconsistent.

Like I said before the season, this is a win-win season.

Either those young players step up, they draft lower but they've developed a solid core of young players, or they don't and they have a great pool of assets going into the 2025 draft.

The identity is pretty clear, a fast aggressive team, but they're missing pieces (a fast puck driving LHD, another top 6 center) and it'll take time. Aggressive hockey is also mistake prone hockey until players get enough experience to cut down on their mistakes.

You forgot to mention how bad they miss Seeler and he will stabilize things.

They are not as young as you make them out to be. With the exception of Jett and MM they all have numerous years of NHL experience under their belts. NHL age > actual age.

If this group doesn't step "up" then they are even way further behind the years it is going to take. Do not trust this group with a great pool of assets. Hopefully they make some foolish trade for a secondary center they pass of ss top end.

Missing numerous pieces. It will take time. They will not allow it to take the proper time as they will continue the Flyers version of a rebuild.

Sorry, not your English. They talk about toughness but they don’t know their talent. They are a small team that SHOULD play a speed/skill game. But they don’t have the speed or skill to pull it off - and no snipers. Their bigger players aren’t hitters. Their D are small and soft or big and soft. Recognition of the talent they have would let them hire a coach who could develop it. Not happening, unfortunately. Let’s hope this year’s tank continues and we get a couple good players out of the draft. Selling off some vets at TDL could help too. PLAY Fedotov! Hagens or bust!

Some early season thoughts:

If Fedotov continues to play like this he will be sent down, contract be damned. Cal friggin Peterson would be an upgrade at this point.

Luchanko needs to be playing Junior hockey. Yeah, he’s good enough to be a 4C right now, but the Flyers are being grossly negligent in his development keeping him here. Let him play top line, all situations for another year in Junior and break him in as the 3C in 25-26.

The D is just bad. York/Sanheim, who are a 2nd pair on a top team, are gonna be burned out by Christmas. Drysdale is useless when the puck isn’t on his stick, and the other 3 currently playing are 6/7 guys. Seeler, if he can get healthy, is a slight upgrade, but it’s not like he’s some all star who will ride in to the rescue.

Tippett has the hockey sense of a baked potato. If he had an even average grasp of how to play game he could be an all star, but he just doesn’t.

Couturier is a 3C at this point and it’s just sad to see. That contract will age like cheese left out in the sun.

Michkov is gonna be an elite superstar, the best player they’ve had since Giroux in his prime. But they are still missing way too many key pieces to be a playoff team, let alone a contender.

Once Walker was traded the D was exposed for how bad it really is.

Andrae give him a shot at this point.
When Risto is not paired with Sanheim he has been a complete failure.
Drysdale you have to play but betting money is he closer to disaster than top 4 d-man (that can change but is what it is)
Staal ERRRR Johnson is ready for AARP. Waive immediately.

Teams without a legit 1c or legit 1d are crud franchises.

Not so young as you think, after this season (a rebuilding season), there are 8 skaters 25 and under. Of a roster of 22 skaters. Aka, about a third. Now maybe one or 2 get added to start the season next year, but that is still a pathetic amount of young players for a "rebuilding" (and cap maxed!) team it seems. Median age right now is, what, 27?

As for the team's identity, they are supposed to be a young, exciting, hard working team. What they actually are is a sort of young, bad at scoring, boring to watch, not overly physical mess. The clock on Torts being able to squeeze juice out of this lineup is ticking, because his one trick is getting old by the looks of it.

The team had almost 2 weeks off between pre-season and regular season, and you think that 3 games into the season on a west coast road trip (one that teams on the west coast make several times a year) is to blame for the team looking piss poor?

Poor baby Flyers, 3 games into the season and their little baby bodies are sleepy. Where is the magical Torts regime that turns them into super soldiers?!

Now did the flyers have bad goaltending in that stretch? Sure. But it has a lot to due with the defense being a hot mess.

Sanheim is a 2 if you squint hard.
York a three
Seeler is a 5 at best. More like a 6 on legit top 4 cup contender.
Johnson is a stiff
Z is a 7
Risto is a 6
Jamie is a 6 at best on actual performance and not potential

The usual way you get 1 c's and 1 d-men is top 10 picks. Only pleather 1's like Seth Jones or Dubois get traded.

The team is one Krug YES from being the worst defense in the league.

If you look at the last 20 games or so last season, metrics were slightly improved at 5x5 after the Walker trade, and that's with Risto out and Seeler hurt.

Getting Seeler back will stabilize this defense.

You can get 1Cs throughout the 1st rd.
Elite forwards, yeah, probably need #1s (only 4 elite centers), wings not so much.
D-men are scatter more than forwards, see Josi, Spurgeon, etc.

Well the front office would care. Why they couldn't part with laughton or seeler and why poehling and Hathaway had to be resigned. Flyers are going for the cultural victory much harder than victory by diplomacy (Civ 3 anyone?)

A sensible plan for going into the season would be for the coach to recognize the difficulties that a tough travel trip would have on his club and adjust his practices accordingly. Torts? Nope. Going to run his ball buster camp to show the players who is the boss.
Even Bruce Boudreau understood that the start of the season was the time when the bad injuries took place. He is on record saying that the guys are not in game shape yet they would be trying to do things that they weren't physically ready to do. He tried to hold the players back a bit for a couple of weeks into the season so that they wouldn't overextend themselves and end up in the medical room. No offense but BB is not exactly a coaching genius but he had this right.

They kind of hit the lottery finding Richards, and Carter late. Were able to win massively on a trade for Timonen. Coburn was a great acquisition for the cost. Briere a prime age talent. Pronger being available. Carle underrated.

They traded, and found that team on FA.

They haven’t been able to do that since, and we kind of are where we are as a result. Imo anyway.

That’s like almost 15 years ago. Yet are we really trying something different today? Playing a bunch of young guys who are okay 2nd liners talent wise, and calling that a rebuild is nothing but BS.

Not having a reliable backup is going to cause Ersson to play more than he should right now. They won’t send Fedotov down because they would be admitting they f***ed up.

I think it's also a problem in that, if they bring Kolosov up and he underperforms... what then?

The Hart burning his career alive, getting lucky with Mitchkov, and Couturier hitting the down slope of his career should be huge red flags saying to abandon ship and get ready to have a prime Mitchkov lead a great team in his prime. They won’t do that though. They’ll tread water and waste his prime before shipping him. Like Giroux, Ghost, Richards, Carter, etc. probably Coots.
