He’s such a treat. A bit quieter than we’d like but he gives everything he has and cares. He’s really raised his game as this season has worn on after his injury. He’s probably the best 3C in the league at this point. I’m sure NJ could get Laine if they offered Hischier in a trade.

he flew under the radar, but i thought smith had a great game last night. a physical presence who played a smart game.

I don't think he flew under the radar, tbh.

He made his presence felt not only with a very KEY goal but also with his physicality and getting into it with Hathaway as well.

Our absolutely heinous power play is down to 23rd in the league in expected goals after last night and down to 12th in the league in percentage after being 1st for a while because of how hot it was to start.

That 23rd in expected goals is as bad as it’s been (and worse) in any year recently, aside from the last year of Recchi in 21-22 when it was 32nd. No Dougie and having Jack miss so much time no doubt drops it significantly, but it’s been really poor for a while. Even when we were scoring every 2 or 3 power plays I think it was still only around 9th or 10th in expected goals. And recently it’s been giving up one or two pretty good short handed opportunities every game, sometimes leading to goals against.

The good news is we’re 5th at expected goals 5 on 5.

Yeah...at this point, the best thing about our Power Play is that it takes 2 minutes off the Game Clock, especially useful if we're leading.

As someone who's a NYC Devils fan, I can't imagine how you native NJers felt with the game yesterday. There were times I welled up with pride seeing this team play in their home state + next to where they won 3 cups. One of the better memories I'll have as a Devils fan granted I wasn't at the game lol

My guess that was due to the ice, temperature and overall the players not used to the environment

This year his play is better, I'd say he's doing more of the little things we never really expected of him, and has earned an everyday spot in the lineup.

Next year more minutes hopefully in the top 9.

For as much as we get on Ruff for not playing him, if Fitz has confidence Holtz can be a player, then he shouldn't trade him.

Especially not in a trade for a 34 year old goalie.

But Fitz has ultimate decision making on Holtz here.

I love how much Smith and Miller were protecting Daws. Going after anyone who took liberties in the crease. As much as it seems like some silly old school, tradition. There is something weird how every other NHL game I watch, there is scuffles when someone tries to get in a goalies face, but the Devils are all happy to skate away on 99% of them.
