AHL Power Rankings Top 10: Hershey Bears Still The Team To Beat
Oct 25, 2024
Patrick Williams

As the AHL season begins, FloHockey's AHL beat writer Patrick Williams will be keeping a semi-regular top 10 in a power rankings of sorts. Check back regularly to see if your favorite team made the list.

Ranking The AHL's Top 10 Teams So Far In 2024-25

1. Hershey Bears

The defending Calder Cup champion Bears loaded up again this summer, but opening the season with five games in eight nights would be a test for any club. For a team that has gone into deep June the past two seasons, those demands are that much more pronounced, something that head coach Todd Nelson has acknowledged. Until the Bears are able to iron out the normal early-season inconsistencies, they have enough to win games on talent alone. In the past, the Bears sometimes lacked all-out firepower; this season’s team is averaging four goals per game. ...

2. Toronto Marlies

Goaltender Artur Akhtyamov, a 2021 fourth-rounder, had shown some potential last season in the KHL. But he came to North America with only 21 games in that league behind him. Through three games, he already has a shutout and is looking like he could be an excellent half of the Marlies’ net tandem with Matt Murray. Alex Nylander has given the Marlies another elite scorer and someone who has made up for the offseason loss of Kieffer Bellows.

3. Calgary Wranglers

Dustin Wolf’s long-awaited promotion to the Calgary Flames had made the Wranglers something of an open question this season, but the Wranglers have gotten off to a 4-1-0-0 start with newcomer Devin Cooley more than handling the job in net.

Rory Kerins, Walker Duehr, and Jakob Pelletier are one-two-three in AHL scoring so far. ...

AHL Power Rankings: Nov. 6

1. Milwaukee Admirals

Even with significant offseason turnover, the Admirals are already starting to round into form. They went into Winnipeg and swept perennial rival Manitoba. Now they have a home-and-home series with Chicago that could yield more points.

Top Scorer: Vinnie Hinostroza (9 GP, 5-11--16) ...

2. Charlotte Checkers

They can skate, and they play with pace. The Checkers look like a legitimate threat to Hershey’s grip on the Atlantic Division.

Top scorer: Aidan McDonough (8 GP, 7-2--9) ...

3. Calgary Wranglers

The Wranglers are feasting during an eight-game homestand that will keep them in town for nearly three weeks. Picking up points is crucial now because eventually a demanding road schedule will beckon as it often does for Pacific Division clubs.

Top scorer: Rory Kerins (11 GP, 9-3--12) ...

AHL Power Rankings: Laval Rocket Take Over Top Spot
Nov 20, 2024
Patrick Williams ...

This week features a new number-one team -- the Laval Rocket, who have gone on an early-season tear led by some of the Montreal Canadiens' to young prospects. Another prospect-laden club, the Grand Rapids Griffins, has made a quick climb up the rankings as well. ...

1) LAVAL (+4)
What’s most encouraging for the Rocket is that it is the prospects who are doing much of the driving, the players whom the Montreal Canadiens are counting on for the future. Players like Owen Beck, Jared Davidson, Adam Engstrom, Logan Mailloux, Joshua Roy, and others are taking significant roles and thriving. And what a story Connor Hughes has been. Signed out of Switzerland, the 28-year-old is pushing for the Laval number-one job in his first pro season in North America.

2) GRAND RAPIDS (+6)
Scoring was an issue, but that has started to come for the Griffins. The Detroit Red Wings have managed Sebastian Cossa’s development methodically and patiently, and they are seeing results from him. Much like Laval, Grand Rapids is a team where the top prospects are allowed to take important roles but are also surrounded by good character veteran support.

3) CALGARY (--)
After a 6-2-0-0 homestand, the Wranglers are finally back out on the road. They got a weekend split at San Jose to open a seven-game road trip and a stretch of 10 of 14 games away from Calgary. If the Pacific Division-leading Wranglers can navigate this journey reasonably well, they could position themselves to put a significant gap between them and the rest of their division mates. ...

AHL Power Rankings: Toronto Marlies Maintain Control Of First Place

Jan 03, 2025
Patrick William

Every two weeks throughout the regular season, FloHockey's AHL expert Patrick Williams will deliver the FloHockey AHL Power Rankings listing all 32 teams.

This week the Toronto Marlies remain in control of the top spot in the Power Rankings. ...

1) Toronto Marlies (--)

The Marlies had a handful of slip-ups in December, but they largely have kept powering through. They possess tremendous goaltending depth with Artur Akhtyamov, Dennis Hildeby, and Matt Murray all having taken turns in net this past month. After two-game weekend home set with Cleveland followed by a visit from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton next week, their annual Toronto International Boat Show road trip will be upon them. This year’s 10-game trek that takes them everywhere from Utica to San Diego and many points in between across North America.

2) Calgary Wranglers (--)

Head coach Trent Cull is up with the parent Calgary Flames as an interim assistant coach. How long? That is still to be determined, but Joe Cirella is taking his spot in charge of the Wranglers for now. They took care of Abbotsford in a pair of home games this week and now have a team that they have dominated, the Manitoba Moose, on this weekend’s home slate.

3) Charlotte Checkers (+7)

The Chris Driedger-Ken Appleby combination in net can be as good any in this league. Driedger took Coachella Valley to the Calder Cup Finals last season, and Appleby has been outstanding and shown that he can handle a heavier workload successfully. The power play is still excelling at 31 percent. Amid a crush of injuries – some of them long-term – the Checkers continue to still excel. With a top-five home record, a six-game homestand that opens next week is a chance for the Checkers to really make a run. ...

AHL Power Rankings: Ontario Reigns As New No. 1
Jan 19, 2025
Patrick Williams

... Out go the Toronto Marlies from the number-one spot. Now atop the AHL are the Ontario Reign. ...

1) Ontario Reign (+4)
There was the blip of a 5-0 home loss to Iowa last Friday, but otherwise the Reign have been dominant. Being able to run Samuel Fagemo, Glenn Gawdin, Charles Hudon, Tyler Madden, Jeff Malott, and Jack Studnicka out on a regular basis gives the Reign some of the AHL’s most productive base of forwards. Since a 6-7-0-0 start, the Reign have gone 15-3-0-1 since Nov. 20.

W2) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (+4)
First-year head coach Kirk MacDonald has more than validated the Pittsburgh Penguins’ decision to bring him in to help revive what had been a sagging farm system. They outscored opponents, 17-4, during three consecutive wins before last Sunday’s matinee defeat at Belleville. When the Penguins dip at all, MacDonald has been quick to address any issues quickly. An annual contender for years, the Penguins are back among the AHL’s top once again.

3) Calgary Wranglers (-1)

The Wranglers have slowed down in the past month, winning just four of their past 11 games. They took a bruising on a two-game weekend trip to Colorado in which the Eagles outscored them, 12-4. Head coach Trent Cull remains with the parent Calgary Flames as an interim assistant coach. After a two-game home series with Tucson this week, the Wranglers will move into a quite winnable stretch in which seven of the following nine games will be against either Abbotsford, Henderson, or San Diego. ...

AHL Power Rankings: Texas Stars Shining Brightly
Jan 29, 2025
Patrick Williams

... This week brings more upheaval as the Texas Stars continue their midseason charge and have put themselves into the number-one spot. ...

1) Texas Stars (+3)

The Stars handled business last weekend in a two-game road sweep of Iowa. For the fourth time in seven games, the Stars will see their long-time foe, Milwaukee. After that, it’s back home for a pair of games against former Stars head coach Derek Laxdal and his Coachella Valley Firebirds. Remi Poirier excelled in net last Saturday for the Stars, who have won 10 consecutive road games.

2) Calgary Wranglers (-1)

Calgary got two significant boosts last weekend. Standout goaltender Devin Cooley returned in net, albeit in an overtime loss at home to San Diego. The Wranglers also had NHL defenseman Tyson Barrie on hand for the weekend, and he helped them to split with the Gulls.

3) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (-1)

After a nine-day break on the schedule, the Penguins stumbled in a loss at Utica before taking the back end of the teams’ home-and-home series. After Hershey, the Penguins go south to Charlotte, where the Checkers have struggled lately but are still a difficult test. The second night with the Checkers starts a difficult February schedule in which the Penguins will later face seven consecutive games on the road.

4) Hershey Bears (-1)

The banged-up, bruised Bears managed to scratch out a point in Laval and Belleville before taking a win in the follow-up with the B-Sens for a relatively successful North Division swing. After a tough visit to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, they get a two-game home set against Bridgeport. That said, the Islanders dealt Hershey a 6-1 home loss back in November. ...

Chirps from Center Ice: AHL Power Rankings – Week 18

(Feb 10, 2025)

You think you have a lot of time in the lead up to the Calder Cup Playoffs, but there’s only like eight weeks left in the season.

There is still time, sure, but you want to be trending upwards.

Laval, Wilkes-Barre and Rochester are all trending upwards, and are in the top three this week.

There are other teams just outside the top ten this week that are making moves like Utica and of all teams Henderson, but of those two I like the Comets overall chances better.

Let’s get into it…
