Since the Firebirds have 2-2nds and 3-3rds, should Dent draft the goalie in round 1 if available?

I think the ‘04 born for Flint are better than the ‘05.
If Dent is building around the 2006-07, sells Hayes if owner allows; the OAs in 2024-25 would be Hay, Day, & ….?
Assuming both get drafted and develop decently, neither of those guys would be OA’s. They’d be off in the AHL.

And have him back up Day for his 1st two….maybe 3 years?

Yeah. You’d imagine those two and Bertucci are gone. I could see maybe Day being a goalie but not if he continues to develop like he has.

To be clear….I’ve read Ivankovic is an unreal talent that’s OHL ready, if they take him in the 1st. He better be. I’d be fine with them taking a top goalie prospect with a 3rd or even 2nd but if the kid is gonna be ready to start at 17, that doesn’t make sense to me after what we’ve seen of Daisy this year.

Hay & Day are round 5-7 NHL picks, right? There’s a good chance they are OAs.
I would not expect Flint to select a goalie first, but the team does have a lot of early picks. If Dent agrees with the scouts, the goalie might be a good idea.

Jacob Brown is signed so I assume he’ll be on the Team next season
They did sign him? I must have missed it or forgot. His numbers in the NOJHL are great and Boe Piroski’s in the GOJHL are pretty good too. If Day stays on path and those two can translate their success to the OHL Flint should be set in goal for next year and the year after.

This is essentially what the Spirit have done with Oke since they didn't trade Lennox last year. If you count Oke's cancelled 16yo season, he has backed up Lennox now for 3 years and during that time he's made the World Jr. team twice (although played very sparingly but still). I don't know anything for sure but I think that the intent was to trade Lennox last year and it just never materialized because of his injuries and then they were "stuck" with him as an OA. I put stuck in quotes because he's obviously a very talented goalie and we were lucky to have him...I just don't think it was part of the plan.

Only drafting 32 guys this year, not 33.

😂😂

At least that deal makes sense but it’s also the opposite direction of what the previous two deals were. Go find a 6 year old kid that doesn’t know how to swim. Pick him up. Throw him in the deep end of a pool. That’s how I view Ted Dent as a GM so far.

Yeah but we’re talking about utilizing a 1st round pick on the kid. That would be the major difference here. I’m sure you’re right about them probably wanting to get Oke starting goalie ice time this year and I’d say he was ready for it. I’d also imagine this year hurt his development a bit too. I didn’t see him as much as you but I didn’t think he looked any better this year than he did last year.

1st Round 15
2nd Round 29, 32
3rd Round 56, 57
4th Round 75
5th Round 93
6th Round 114

Hopefully they can pull 4 solid 16yo’s that’ll be on the ice next year.

Actually….going through ONLY the Western Conference’s draft picks THIS YEAR, the only team I’d switch places with is Kitchener. He did give up some future 2nds to get there though and it doesn’t matter if you don’t pick the right kids AND get them to report. We’ll see.

Jeremy Martin, Wing, Toronto Marlboros (GTHL)
A dynamic winger for the Marlboros this year, Martin is a big fast winger who plays an extremely aggressive style of game. Martin plays an intimidating brand of hockey. He's the type of player who constantly moves his feet when he's on the ice utilizing his feet to bring a strong forecheck against the opposition, getting pucks in dee, forcing pucks loose, finishing his checks hard and not allowing the opposition time and space with the puck. The 6 ft winger combines both his size and strength with his quick feet and speed to be a consistent threat off the rush, he gets low in his stance he drives deep into the ice, and uses his body really effectively to drive the net with the puck, generating a great deal of offensive chances as a result.

Jimmy Lombardi, C, Don Mills Flyers (GTHL)
Lombardi, who could very well be taken in the first round, is a strong 200 foot centreman with a knack for winning face-offs. With Erie projected to take Schaefer first, and picking up former GTHL superstar winger Malcolm Spence in last years draft, it only makes sense for them to take a chance on this crafty forward. What stands out most about Lombardi is his ability to never stop moving. He is consistently active in the play in all areas of the ice, making presence known to everyone when on the ice. Standing at 5’11”, 147 lbs, he may not be the biggest on the ice, however that never stops lombardi from battling along the boards and making calculated checks to separate players from the puck. Lombardi is a strong skater who makes effective use of his edges to make quick direction changes to evade traffic. With the puck, he has the ability to protect it against other top plyers and defenders. Lombardi is versatile, having the ability to play the perimeter and actively engage in the slot. When in the defensive zone, he demonstrates an understanding of his assignments, picking up his man and clogging up passing lanes. Lombardi’s game should transition well to the next level.

5. Niagara IceDogs* (Chase Rochon) - Dryden Allen, D, Southern Tier Admirals (OMHA/SCTA)
The Icedogs are in a tough position with their compensation pick for Sam Dickinson, who failed to report last summer. After one season of new, inexperienced management, they will be forced to make safe decisions on draft day for players who will report for training camp, as this year's compensation pick will not be eligible to be compensated for next year. Using this pick to take the best player available that they believe will report will be the best route. Dryden Allen playing for the local AAA team, Southern Tier Admirals, would be a great, safe pick. Currently, a late first to early second-rounder, Allen would not be too far of a reach to ensure they are still getting a great player. This also fills the hole in young defence after losing Dickinson last year. Allen is great at headmanning the puck and driving play which is exactly what Niagara needs. Allen has lots of growing left to do, and once he fills out can use this more to his advantage as he is still quite slim. He is an excellent skater with a high IQ, shown by his decision-making and ability to read and create plays shows he has the tools and capability to succeed at the next level.

Well….there’s a LONG way to go, starting with signings but on first glance it appears Dent and the scouting staff did pretty well. I don’t go watch midget games other than a rare Compuware vs whoever game and I didn’t read up on kids as much this year as in the past but it looks ok to my ignorant eyes at a glance. You’d have to imagine Lombardi signs and you gotta think they’ve confirmed Martin too. I’m usually ok with trading a defective 1st rounder and getting the comp pick but since Dent traded to acquire picks this year, that seems an unlikely plan? Unless those picks were to soften the blow of not having a signed 1st rounder. Lombardi should be good for ticket sales and if he’s half as good as Amadeus (for 4-5 years) that’s a solid pick. That is his brother right? We know Amadeus’ parents raise high quality character so that’s a big +.

Be great if one these boys end up contributing. I wasn’t really sure about Jenken for most of the season but he looked really good late once he’d gained some confidence and I’m sure will contribute next year.

Can’t wait to see which guys show up at orientation..also came across this

Now to work on signing him which I imagine will be a struggle.

Man. I thought I was going crazy. I woke up one day this weekend, took a look at my phone and thought I saw something about a Firebirds development camp. Later that day, I checked here, Firebirds IG, Firebirds website and nothing. I just took another look and yes, they did Tweet some pics out but I’m not on Twitter. A little info about it would have been nice. It looks like it might have been open to the public but I missed it if any info was put out about it. I doubt I would have went last weekend but it would be cool if they put an attendees list out or something. At least they were putting names on the backs of jerseys. It’s difficult to try and scout and assess 20+ kids at the camps all while trying to figure out who is actually who. Judging by the 4 pictures they posted….looks like Martin was there. There’s a kid wearing a Caesars lid, so that’s probably Evan Jardine. 9th rounder from this year. It would be huge if they could start pulling more kids from Metro Detroit. Especially if it’s in the later rounds. A quick look on Elite Prospects show Jardine putting up 47g and 137pts in 81 games. Now…I’m not ultra familiar with AAA MM Metro Detroit numbers but….137 in 81 is usually pretty good anywhere. The only other kid likely to be wearing a Caesars helmet is ‘22 5th Round 6’2 winger Darian Anderson. It would be great to see either or both commit. ‘22 5th Round 6’2 D Nathan Schaap is there. Decent offensive #’s and a few PIM’s there too. There’s a kid wearing York-Simcoe Express kit, so I’d imagine that’s ‘23 10th Round D Lucas Manikis. Hopefully all the boys that attended enjoyed themselves and went home healthy. The difficult to far-fetched signing options to hope for are ‘05 D Andrew Strathmann, ‘05 F Brandon Svoboda, or ‘06 F Riley Patterson. Any one of those 3 would be huge signings. Patterson would be stealing a MSU commit from MJ5 though. I think Svoboda is Boston U and Strathmann is….Quinnipiac?
