this might be a stupid question since i've never played nhl hockey but what exactly does a goalie coach do for an nhl veteran thats played 500+ games or someone thats been in the league like 8+ years? like i get it if theres a rookie goalie or 3rd year pro or coming from euro.

i've been asking that for years. nobody here knows, but having a fall guy is very convenient so here we are.

The reasons for last night's loss are myriad but the fancy numbers say that Bratt Mercer and Haula struggled mightily in terms of the expected goals rating. As a group the only forward above 50% for the game was Hischier. Hard to know how much was on Markstrom but the team did him no favors in the third.

Cory was benched over less in March of 2018. Although Cory was really bad leading up to him leaving the lineup to injury, which Markstrom wasn’t.

They were basically done with Cory by game 68 after only 3 games played in March/returning from injury to that point. Kinkaid even played an entire back to back set, but got lit up for four in the second half of it by the Ducks after shutting out the Kings the night before.

So they went with Cory in what was game 73 against the Sharks, but he was horrible and had to be pulled in the 2nd period. That was his last start until game 82. We clinched with a win in game 81. Kinkaid played every game between from there on out, including two entire sets of back to backs.

I really thought the Pittsburgh game was Markstrom’s Cory in San Jose moment, but last night BETTER have been it.

I looked up game logs from hockey reference to get precise numbers. There was no way I would have remembered game numbers. I actually thought Cory played more than 4 games that month. So I looked up what game of the year it was when we played San Jose and he was benched till the clinch. I do remember that game though.

Said it a million times. Skill with goalies is important, but confidence is most important.

If the team starts running around and you can sense a goal coming in the audience, even a Shesterkin or Heleybuk will give one up unless they are supremely confident.

Dano and Bryce said at some point late in the 2nd. "We saw this with the Blue Jackets last game" where the ice just tilts for several shifts in a row, and we can't complete passes, win the puck out get out of our end.

It took a few ridiculous stops by Allen to keep us alive last game and he is feeling it right now

Markstrom started the game on shaky ground. Most goales would not have made it out of the third without giving up goals.

I agree that they should sub for nemec. I agree that the defenseman are tied and it shows up differently for each guy But the bottom line is learning how to not panic.

If we play the same way, it doesn't matter who is in net.

He let in 3 goals on 14 shots, and 2 of those goals weren’t grade A chances.

I’m pretty confident we win that game if Allen is in net.

Imagine Allen letting in like 9 goals in the Columbus game. That's basically what Markstrom has done his last 2 games.

He also turned back the clock to 2017 for the Pens on Saturday. And we didn't play as bad that game as we did in the 3rd last night, we just couldn't score (big surprise!) until we started getting power plays.

I'm pretty confident that if Markstrom plays okay we get at least 2 points and very likely 3 combined out of the Pittsburgh and Calgary game, with the potential to get all 4.

'one good month' where he put up a .937 and was 8-1-1. Do we really have to do this every time? It's the best regular season month for a Devils goaltender maybe ever. Yeah, there's one other good month, 2 okay months, and one awful, bottom falling out month, but please don't engage in reverse hyperbole.

If you're happy with giving up a first rounder for one month of goaltending then I don't know what the f*** to tell you, lol

He's gonna finish well below Vanecek's save % from 22-23 and somehow this fanbase is ok with that after crushing Vanecek for being mentally soft most of that year.

He's cost us multiple games this year with his soft shitty goals, not shocking at all
