Seravalli: Flames trying to trade for a center

Would Calgary throw their season to save their first pick? Could come down to that. They about a .500 team. Draft about 13-15.
Troll post? Calgary had like .960 goaltending in the first 6 games. That was completely unsustainable and the games vs Vegas and Utah proved it. They are also only 2 points above the team currently ranked 10th last, and only 3 above the team ranked 7th last. Come back in February and we can discuss then.

After 6 games the combined Save% of Wolf and Vladar was nowhere near .960, it was .918. But even that is unsustainable with the defense in front of them.

What was also unsustainable was them scoring nearly 4 goals per game, for a team that should be middle of the pack in scoring.

The Flames also had a pretty lucky/weak sked to start the season. The Canucks were without Demko, and while Silovs has potential, he's not NHL ready IMO. Philly (G2), Chicago (G4), Seattle (G5) and Pittsburgh (G6) aren't exactly the class of the NHL , I expect all of them to miss the playoffs. Then there was the Oilers who simply hadn't started scoring yet and Skinner/Pickard had a SV% under .800

After that, things got much harder with Carolina, Winnipeg and Vegas, who are my pre-season picks to win their divisions. Then Seattle and New Jersey, both of whom should be bubble teams. Frankly I wouldn't be shocked if we went .400 or lower the rest of the way.

I don't understand why people think our defense is so bad.

Sure miromanov is out of his depth but the rest are solid. Defense has not been an issue at all.

Bean and Bahl have been huge hits and I don't foresee that falling off. Maybe not playoff caliber but not a huge glaring weakness

I was interested in Protas before he took off. Now he's probably too expensive to consider.

The Flames are a hard working team. That *almost* makes up for a real lack of talent on their roster. Perhaps management should consider acquiring young yet-to-be-developed talent instead of going after an established center. In a year or two they might have something.

Just my opinion though.

Long-term they’re better off just drafting a C. I don’t think there’s much doubt that they’ll be picking in the top-10 (and possibly the top-5) the next two years at least. They’re a cap floor team.

I’m sure they’d like a developmental type of center but they’re not going to pay much for one.

Flames have decent team. Better than last year. Good defense with solid veterans up front.

Our team is absolutely not better than last years' version.

We played 25-75% of the season with:

Lindholm
Zadorov
Hanifin
Tanev

We played 100% of the season with:
Mangiapane
Markstrom

We replaced that with:
Kevin Bahl
Jake Bean
Anthony Mantha
Tyson Barrie
Ryan Lomberg

That's it. And while Kevin Bahl has easily been one of the best additions I can recall in recent memory, playing 21 minutes a night, against the other teams' best players most starting in his own zone... We lost a lot of good players.

We've turned back into pumpkins. It was a was a fun way to start the year going 5-0, but since then we're 1-5-1; you can assume the latter will be how things play out for us the rest of the way. If we hit 80 points this year it's going to be a miracle. Keeping in mind that Kuzmenko, Mantha will both be dealt at some point; and that there's a chance someone like Kadri is just like 'I don't want to do this anymore' once we start really stringning together a lot of losses.

The Flames had absolute horse shoes up their @##@ those first 5 games. They only beat the Oilers, because the Oilers had two goals called back. Everything was going right for them, and now they are coming back down to Earth.

It’s funny. I think Habs fans are more invested in this Flames season than Flames fans are.

The reality is the Flames are built to lose. And they are beginning to achieve that goal. It’s only likely to get worse.

The Flames have the 3rd lowest payroll in the league (was 2nd before Gaudreau passed away). The Flames have $19.4 million in cap space, and are likely to shed more vets through the season. They are not trying to compete.

Meanwhile, Florida is 2nd overall and looks great.

Montreal is almost certainly getting Florida's pick....stranger things have happened I guess?
