and then we'll hear a month from now "all of the options were too expensive.....they wanted player X...!" Rinse and repeat to pretend as if the Flames aren't tanking.

Well yes.
But also, we aren't quite tanking. The lineup we have in the NHL while it isn't great, isn't tanking team bad.

The cost of sub 24 centres, especially with upside is normally pretty astronomical. That all said, you just wait for dumb teams to do dumb things. Pretty much NHL 101.

Brads not hear any more. We don't need to hear nonsense about the process.

If a deal isn't available so be it. I don't know what else Conroy has to do to convince people they aren't tanking though.

At this point he's probably looking for an upgrade on Miromanov as well. Bahls been great.

Are the Flames looking for a younger center to develop with the team? Meaning a long-term solution that will cost actual assets?

Or are they looking more short-term for fewer assets?

Honestly, Lars Eller and Kevin Hayes have been looking good for the Penguins. Maybe not the sexiest options but the cost would be reasonable and they would certainly fill a role. Eller is a UFA and is playing for a contract. Hayes has one more year left but only at $3mil.

They are looking for an under 26 year old center who is also a right handed shot.

Yeah, Conroy just explains how the deal fit into his idea now. For a guy that never stop talking, honestly speaking it's impressive how he's kept most of these trade rumors under wraps to the level he has so far.

The Markstrom one though, I don't know if that one was on him for getting out... but that one got weird.

This.
Not the other one. We have three NHL-level centres already. Kadri and Backlund have been guys doing the full time centre thing for over a decade. Pospisil is currently centering the top offensive unit with Huberdeau and Mantha and is the leading scorer down the middle for us. Connor Zary is a natural centre and has talked about wanting to get back to that role last summer although he's currently tied for second in points and has looked offensively strong on the wing (arguably this is Treliving's best GMing drafted Zary while trading down twice in his last few years).

We have Sharangovich coming back in a few weeks who can play centre (albeit a better scoring winger).

Looking for a 22-24 year old guy, change of scenery candidate. Top 6 type upside if they aligned.

Going off who I think Conroy means:

Kirby Dach
Trevor Zegras
Alex Newhook
Peyton Krebs
Connor McMichael
Shane Pinto
Dawson Mercer
Dylan Cozens

Calgary's a really solid development team, something I don't think they get enough credit for; especially in recent history (let's say the past 10 years). They've also really gotten the most out of younger guys they've acquired. Sharangovich went from healthy scratch to 30 goals; Kevin Bahl, albeit a short time frame, has been really, really good in Calgary. Like he's easily been one of our three best defenders. Getting blood from stone in Pachal who's been a great depth guy as a waiver find.

Before this thread chugs to a halt, I think someone like Shane Pinto would fit Conroy's profile.

Age 23, RHS C, 6'3", 201 lb. from Franklin Square, NY.

Sens have little cap room and trading him for picks/prospects/roster player for any gaps they may have might work.

I do not know what their needs are, but Flames have currency at the wing and defensive positions, not to mention cap space.

Is Pinto the cat's meow? I don't know that either, but would file him under succession planning for the day that Backlund or Kadri are no longer with the club (or injured).
Pinto is going to get the $4m from Perron's contract tacked onto his when their respective contracts end. This being beyond the fact that he is pretty much an untouchable asset to the team.

Sens are actually poised really well as far as the cap is concerned.

Barzal + Engvall for 1st, Coronato, and roster piece.
Calgary is looking for trades that actively make the team younger, not older. While Flames posters here probably wouldn’t agree I could see some of our excess 1sts being used in a trade like this, but Coronato wouldn’t be the piece going back. Value wise I think the Flames win big there, but I don’t think that’s what Conroy has in mind.

Something more along another teams 1st, and a mix of 2 of the following would be closer: Kadri, Andersson at 50%, Coleman, or one of our 2023/24 drafted prospects (other than Honzek and Parekh). Calgary would obviously love to get their hands on Barzal, but I doubt this would be enough.
