HF Habs: Flames or Panthers 1st Round Pick 2025: Part II

Us and the Flames are also closing in on the Devils now. If we and the Flames make the playoffs, we may draft after the Devils.

Minny and St. Louis really need to hold off the Flames.
The Flames are 5 points behind with only 4 games left and unless they win their 4 games in regulation and the other teams don't win any they wont have the tie break. At this point of the year it's a huge margin.

His stupid 'retirement tour'. Like dude, piss off and go away, we get it, you are done playing hockey. Stop hugging everyone after every game and waiving at the fans since game 1 this season. You are leaving a life of stopping a puck, you have 30 million in the bank, a hot wife, and you stole Lafleur's nickname. I'm not shedding a tear over you leaving. PS your rookie card is worthless
Hello , I totally agree with you , Flower is so overatted

St. Louis only has 2 games left (lost 2 in a row after 5 straight wins by 1 goal, including 2 in OT); I could see them losing both. I could also see Calgary winning 3 of 4 (3 home games; 1 game against San Jose, 2 against teams that will be resting players). Not that it's the likeliest scenario, but not entirely unlikely either, which would put Calgary in a playoffs spot.

Of course, a Minnesota win would go a long way :)

Yes but Calgary has been playing 500ish (+ loser points) hockey for a while and they finish against Wild, Vegas and LA. Let's say they finish 2-1-1. That wont be enough to make it. They need 3 wins in 4 games minimum and they play against 3 strong opponents in those games. Kaprisov is back and had 2G 1 A in his first game. Wild without Kaprisov is an easy prey but with him they are a though opponent and they'll be looking at clinching their spot. I just don't see it for Calgary. Stl also finish against Seattle and Utah two teams playing 500ish hockey i expect them to win one.

The Flames play Minny tonight. If they win they’re 3 points behind, with 1 game in hand. If they win that game in hand, they’re 1 point behind minny with 2 games left. Yes that’s a lot of winning. But it's a short period.

I guess we'll see who's available with the habs picks, but I haven't even looked at the draft board because I don't think they'll keep the pick anyways.

Window is open and Habs have a lot of cash to go shopping!

I follow the draft yearly but I agree, it's being traded, perhaps both picks. As long as the return isn't a gamble or a project!

If it's being traded it got to be for a signed player in his prime max 26 years old next season and that player got to be good. Drafted player can get value. If we were to offer Hage now his value would be higher than the pick used to draft him. Those picks can's be used for a guy who's gonna turn 30 two years or less into our window that would be dumb.

One option is to trade up. Pens 2nd round pick will be high and could be used to upgrade one of the 1st round pick by 3-4 ranks.

WIndow is open but you always need ELC in the middle of a window. Like the Pens who got Guentzle and the caps who got Kuznetsov. Being in a window doesn't mean you can shit on the draft and stop developping. If we do start focussing solely on vets like we did during the MB era the window will be very short again like it was for Subban/Price/Patch. That window was 4 years for a reason and that reason is we stopped caring about the draft and development. A team always need a good mix of vets and youth. Sonner than later Suzuki will be a vet.

Habs have one of the most stacked prospect pools in the NHL. They have $20M+ in cap. They have huge roster spots to fill with upgraded players.

Given all the needs they have and what assets they have, it would be irresponsible of them not to dangle every single pick they have if it helps them fill the holes they need to fill now, not in 3-5 years when they players they'd draft now would be ready to make a real impact.

Once those spots are filled, they can look at future drafts etc. but the needs they have now need to be addressed in the next 2 off seasons if they want to capitalize on a lower cap cost (Demidov & Hutson etc.) to round this team out into a true contender.

At this moment, if good players drop at 16, I would select. But if they don't drop... I would like see Kent Hughes put their 2 1st picks in a package to add a very good top 6 C.

He said in interview recently that he have the assets to overpay for something good. This summer will be time to trade assets to acquire top 6 C, Top 4 RD and maybe more.

We'll see how the playoffs go. But as of now, we have 4 top 4 dmen: Hutson, Guhle, Matheson, Carrier. Plus Reinbacher is on the way.

I would certainly rather we use our assets to get a 1a/1b C.

Really good players get traded for late 1st round picks. I would expect that mid 1st round picks attract solid players maybe with expiring contracts.

What team is looking to give up a really good C for the 15th or worse pick in a draft that is said to be top 10 heavy and then after that to drop off?

with the rising cap, there's so much cap-space this off-season I wouldn't be surprised to see even aging teams (like the Pens with 23M) try to re-tool on the fly via UFA signings instead of trading top 6 players for draft picks.

Huge game tonight!

10 PM: Minnesota @ Calgary - If Calgary loses in any manner, Edmonton & Minnesota clinch. They only need Calgary to lose a point.

If Calgary wins, no one clinches. Flames can still get to 96 points.

St. Louis can't clinch tonight regardless of result.

Just realized Edmonton has a game tonight. They're hosting San Jose. Game starts a half hour earlier than the Calgary game, so Edmonton can clinch themselves with one point.
