Meh. He was okay offensively when he was receiving passes from a HoF center he was still terrible defensively and cared about conditioning less than Phil Kessel leading to his career ending well before it should have.

Wingers in general didn't backcheck at all during those years, he looked total fine during their 2002 cup run.

It's on Keefe that the personnel don't play with grit? We have been here for 8 years with two different coaches. This group of players just don't play that game.

It’s okay to mold some players into an archetype of the style of game you want them to play.

There’s nothing wrong with asking players to scrum it up, throw open ice hits, run someone, face wash someone, just have some physicality.

Especially when your teammates are being taken advantage of.

I see nothing wrong with demanding the whole team plays bigger than they are.

Just because Willy doesn’t like to play all that physical doesn’t mean he can’t. Matthews can be an absolute bull.

Maybe Marner you might lose that battle with, but not JT. He knows how to hit and muck it up and retaliate. If you’re JT and you’re getting a high stick uncalled high stick across the face, go ahead and hack an ankle.

If you’re Sammy and the crease is getting crowded, tell him it’s okay to whack a two-hander across the back of Bennet’s knees.

Kampf, jarnkrok, knies, everyone.

The whole team plays tough, no matter how uncomfortable you are with it.

I bet most of these guys would play a lot tougher in an environment like Boston demands

I don’t dislike Keefe as a coach. They are better ones out there but there are a lot that are worse too. But that said I still agree. I think any coach will struggle to get this team to defend well the way it’s currently constructed but they certainly aren’t built to play the way Keefe likes to coach and he hasn’t been able to adapt. Even if I think it would be quite difficult with this roster it’s his job to do it.
