I think they're taking a nice step, but I also expect them to significantly regress and likely end up as more of a middle of the pack dark horse than a top contender in the west.
They're playing well over their head, their underlying numbers are absurd.

Keefe needs to get off this brutal defensive structure. Why are we still swarming the strong side down low? It's such an easy play for the forechecking forwards to bank it back to the point, then we have non-existent coverage high in the zone and their defencemen are getting free reign to stroll to high danger ice and shoot while our wingers float around in no man's land. So stupid.

Kind of reminds of Carlyles system where at the end of his tenure the leafs were getting hemmed in their zone for absurd amount time several times a game.
This isn’t as bad, but it’s getting there if Keefe doesn’t change anything.
I highly doubt it, and if there is, the cost will be inflated since lots of teams need goalies.
I’m okay riding with Woll and an experienced backup (like Allen) as long as we fix our D.

I think that's because we don't do it often enough. I'm a firm believer of the "they can't call everything" strategy the Bruins and Panthers take.
Treliving has to prioritize the value of these players - and construct a roster that can contend in short order ... one or two of these guys have to suck it up and " sacifice " the huge paycheck for a big pay check to win ... if they dont want to do that they can walk

Real Kyper was saying that internally Shanahan and Treliving are ranking Nylander ahead of Marner, and this has evolved over the past couple of years.

He's on this contract until 38 IIRC.
