Seems short?
For Sam I would agree. He’s 25 so this does take him to 28. After 3 years since he finished his elc you should know what he is.

I figured his options were a 1 year deal to hit ufa or he would do term.
Maybe he figures the cap will rise significantly in 3 years so even at 28 that’s still a good time to hit the market.

is he though or did he just walk into a golden situation with a franchise center, winger and defenseman already in place and figuring out the rest is just the easy part

No, the moves Zito made last offseason completely changed the culture of the team. The Panthers had been a lazy, underachieving team since 17-18, with some pieces that didn't quite fit. Hornqvist and Gudas were absolutely huge leadership additions, and Zito also brought in a lot of hardworking two-way guys, as well as some hungry players looking to prove themselves like Duclair and Verhaeghe. He's done a lot in one year, it's amazing looking at this roster now as compared to summer of 2020.

Good deal for both sides but how is Florida going to keep Barkov after this? They're currently projected to have $14.5 million of cap space in 22-23 to sign Barkov, five other forwards and a defenseman.

Great deal for player and team.

If it doesn't work out, tradable deal.

If he takes off, can get a better deal in short order there or somewhere else.

Good for Florida and Sam

Lundell and Denisenko will be playing for essentially 1M each. Barkov will get 10. Hornqvist will be shipped out and the remaining number will be 3 forwards and 1 D man for about 9M.

Huberdeau and Weegar in 2 years remain the biggest concerns not Barkov.

That deal is also probably already done. I think they are just waiting for him to return from Finland to announce it.

Dumping Hornqvist would work but I'm not sure anyone would want him at the full cap hit if he drops off next season. Although looking at it again, Gudas might be enough depending on Tippett and Luostarinen's raises.

Huberdeau and Weegar will be tough but at least the Yandle buyout is at a reasonable level by then.

Buying out Bob is one option. Trading Hornqvist and someone else is another.

Fair question. The hope is that Barkov takes a team friendly deal and we have some good prospects knocking on the door both on defense and up front so the expectation is they will step in on cheaper rookie deals to fill out the roster.

Trade or buy-out Hornqvists last year and they are fine. That would give them nearly 20 million for Barkov and the rest. ELCs and vets under $1 million.
