Guy is probably 3 years away from cracking the NHL and 5 from becoming a legit starter if he actually has that sort of potential.

Lots can change in 3-5 years; the team's current goaltending landscape ought to have little to do with it.

Or Bobrovsky? This definitely creates a wrinkle in their goaltending situation.

I don't think so.

Guzda is just a prospect. I would be surprised if he plays any NHL games on his ELC. They don't have to worry about how he affects the NHL team for a while.

I think it means less for Florida than it does guzda. I can see why they'd sign him, just confused as to why he would. Must have liked their development pitch.

I imagine it was something like:

"We only have two goalies signed next season, so there's a good chance you'd begin in the AHL and get a decent amount of starts. As a bonus, our AHL affiliate is relatively close to your hometown."

versus most other teams:

"We already have an AHL guy or two signed for next season, so there's a chance you'd have to start in the ECHL. But we'd give you every opportunity to earn an AHL spot."

Just looking at the 2022-23 depth charts of the teams that Jeff Marek listed as being interested:

Florida: Bobrovsky | Johansson (RFA) | Knight | Fitzpatrick (RFA)

Anaheim: Gibson | Stolarz | Dostal | Eriksson-Ek (RFA) | Alexander (WHL -- could sign ELC)

Pittsburgh: Jarry | DeSmith (UFA) | Lindberg | D'Orio (RFA) | Blomqvist (ELC?) | Clang (ELC?)

NY Rangers: Shesterkin | Georgiev | Huska (RFA) | Wall (RFA) | Garard (ELC) | Lindbom (ELC?)

Nashville: Saros | Rittich (UFA) | Ingram | Vomacka | Cooley (RFA) | Askarov (ELC?)

Carolina: Andersen | Raanta | Makiniemi | Warm | Kochetkov (ELC?)

Toronto: Campbell (UFA) | Mrazek | Woll (RFA) | Kallgren | Scott (RFA)

people looking for the why, it’s right here in his own words. As has been said, lots can change in 3-5 years.
best place for long term prospects: great development system and not too much pressure. Plan is probably to back up Knight in four years

Kind of interesting this was the team him and his agent chose.

Usually you aim for teams where you have a shot at making the NHL roster.

Is Spencer Knight getting traded or getting sent down (can he pass waivers) or is he just accepting not being in the NHL this year?
Should also consider the track record of that team when it comes to development of their goaltenders over the past several years in the AHL.

Knight has just 4 games in the A.
Sam Mont. spent most of his career after being drafted in 2015 in the A and where is he now.

Not as if FLA has a proven track record of developing goalies.

lol ok? They’ve also completely revamped how they do things recently and have very well respected and successful people involved in goalie development. He and Spencer (who’s in the NHL) will be the first guys to go through it. Knight is young, has struggled some, but has also looked terrific at times. At 20!

Per Marek: “There is a young goaltender named Mack Guzda. He plays for the Barrie Colts of the OHL and is someone that the Maple Leafs are very much trying to sign. Their pursuit, I am told, is very aggressive. … The Penguins, the Rangers, the Predators are all considered front runners. Also, the Islanders, Ducks, and Hurricanes are said to be interested.”
Guzda said that the way the Panthers treated him in 2019 — an undrafted goalie who was not part of their organization — also played into him signing with Florida.
“I was down there for a week,’’ he said. “I wasn’t drafted or anything but they made me feel like I was part of it. I had a really close feel, everyone in the organization is real close. It just felt like a Florida Panthers family if that makes any sense. They have a great winning culture there, they’re developing players and winning games. It’s exciting and I look forward to contributing in any way possible.”
