Things will be interesting next summer for the Panthers and the cap. I believe they now have about $72M locked up for next year plus another $6.5M in dead cap from Yandle and Scott Darling. So not a huge amount to round out the roster without moving someone.

I think it's a great deal for both sides, but I don't get the "steal" argument here.

I don't understand how the ~10th best player getting the 10th highest cap hit in hockey is some sort of "steal" at all

I'd assume Hornqvist is the main suspect here whether he has an elective surgery right before next season starts (where have we seen this before?!?) and miraculously comes back post trade deadline or he's simply moved in a trade similar to Stralman, with a couple sweeteners attached.

Main RFAs are Tipp who shouldn't be more than $2.5 mil on a bridge.
Luostarinen and Lammikko aren't going to cost a ton.

Vatrano and Acciari are likely gone as well.
It'll be harder in the 2022-23 off season, depending on what the plan is with Huberdeau.

I did not like when the Bob contract was signed. His play the last two seasons has been worse than even I expected. Truly brutal contract. Awful parting gift from Tallon. The buyout sucks as well. Sigh.

It would be enough to fit Barkov in and also sign a 1B for Knight. That's all I care about right now.

I don't think anyone would have expected him to slow down that much, though last season was better than his first with the Panthers.

$500K more per year than Point...I can see it with Barkov's elite two-way effectiveness. It isn't a bad contract by any means, even if it's an insane amount of money. It's certainly less than he would've gotten in the pure UFA market.

Very good player and a good deal. Barkov is not quite a top-5 Centre(he's maybe 7th or 8th) so 10M is an appropriate dollar amount for him. And it's good for Florida, having him locked up for 8 years.

Who is better at C!? Mcjesus and Mckinnon don't play the type of 200ft game you need to win a cup and Crosby, Bergeron adn Kopitar are on their way down.

Add to that he is the most humble and nicest guy you could meet and a deserves every single penny.

ALL HAIL Sahsa!

Seems fair for both sides if he can stay healthy enough. He has only played 82 once.

8 years $80 mil is a bargain for the type of player Barkov is.
In Florida yes. That would cost probably 1-2 million more elsewhere if they wanted him and he agreed. The tax on signing bonuses must be very very low as well. I think Matthews was 15% on his signing bonuses.
