Ekblad is coming off the books and if you squint, you can see some world where Jones’ remaining term doesn’t look quite as horrible as it used to with the rising cap and salaries for defensemen of his ilk only going to rise.

That’s not an endorsement of Jones as a $9.5 AAV defenseman, rising cap or not…but this new world is going to make some previously onerous contracts slightly less so.

Ekblad himself may not be too much cheaper long-term and at least Jones can still skate and hasn’t had his legs repaired five times.

Anyways, with Montour gone it was obvious the Panthers could use another minute-munching RHD so they keep their top 4 out there in the playoffs 90% of the game and not have to expose the Kulikov’s, Schmidt’s and Balinski’s of the world.
