Jones retained at 25% is a perfectly good contract. It allows the Panthers to load up their top four this year (effectively a Montour replacement) and it lets them let Ekblad and his shredded legs walk in the summer.

Jones is a much better bet at $7.125 AAV moving forward than whatever terrible deal Ekblad is going to get this summer.

Backup schmackup. This was an easy yes for the Panthers. They can get a backup easy enough. The time is now.
