Has Alex DeBrincat come up in any trade discussions?

I dont know, I like him, he can play centre as well, shoots right, contract ends 26-27.

Hia career stats are also eerily similar to Laine's, it surprised me tbh:

Debrincat has never played centre. He waited out Ottawa to go to Detroit, he’s staying there.

Also the last thing we need is another small scorer.

Of course his cap hit aint the cheapest, but he is a solid guy in terms of production. Useful on PP as well. I would honestly consider him and Laine as sort of similar pieces in terms of the value they bring as a whole on the second line (especially when Laine is healthy). I can see Habs doing a decision on whether to extend or trade Laine on next seasons TDL based on how they value him in comparison to guys like DeBrincat. Their cap hits will be very similar as well.

No thx, not what we need at all
If Im considering extending Laine, Im definitely measuring him against guys like DeBrincat. The cost to acquire e.g. someone like DeBrincat is of course a lot compared to not having to "pay" anything to extend Laine.

OK all

I get that IF KH traded evans and armia, the team would be pissed.
all I ask is then show KH no more playing like the 2nd and 3rd like last night
yes they won, but they stopped playing.... start playing 60 minutes
that is a strong message to KH playing only 20 minutes is a joke

Hughes should meet with Suzuki and tell him they will have to play better than the last 2 periods last night or he will sell. Of course it wasn't Suzuki who was bad after the 1st.

2C’s currently out of a playoff position. Omitting some ridiculous contracts and some younger core pieces.

Laine - Malkin - Demidov?

Never? Damn he certainly plays with center mindset, at least did when he was sharing those duties with the rookie Pinto as his center. But yea maybe saying that he can also play centre is a bit of a stretch from me.

Laine - Malkin - Demidov as the second line of Habs sounds pretty huge (at least for us who see that Demi will deliver already from his rookie season, and that Laine will continue at least at his post-4nations -level).

To me, that's just nerves. They're the 2nd youngest team and all, and feeling the pressure. Ready to sacrifice themselves, but a little all over the place because of the energy.

That's all the value of playing meaningful games. Today, that's on Marty's board. Maybe next time, we put the fourth one in and close the game for a full 60.

I wouldn't evaluate where we're at in terms of the rebuild by looking at high pressure games we looked a little shaky in, but ended up winning.

I'm not a size above all else but I agree with this. If you go and look at the last 10 Stanley Cup winners, none of them have 3 small players like we currently do (Gallagher, Hutson, Caufield). I think only one of them had 2. Small players have their place but this team needs bigger players. No more acquiring small players.

Tampa

Yanni Gourde 5'9
Tyler Johnson 5'8

Point is listed at 5'11, but I am sure dude is smaller than that.

That is not to say that we can take on more smaller players, but it's nor accurate to say cup winners have not had small players.

I don’t think you can have a top 6 that includes both Caufield and Debrincat, who also hasn’t been very good the last few seasons. Give me Laine with all his flaws (don’t forget he’s missed a full year and is probably still not 100%) at a cap hit if 6-7m for a few years that won’t cost us anything else than cap space rather than spend assets to acquire a player who’s redundant and doesn’t fill a need. I’d rather spend those assets on a solid C and a RD.

Getting a 2C is a need now and in future seasons. If the team can swing a deal before the deadline, I think it’s a no-brainer.

The issue remains the lack of options. Non-playoff teams aren’t exactly full of top-6 centers.

Cozens
Horvat
McTavish/Zegras

Wennberg
O’Reilly
Pageau
Novak
Utah is currently a non playoff team so u could throw in Hayton.....former 5th overall pick but has never lived up to it....although he is 54% on draws this year.

if KH can somehow miraculously find his long term 2C via trade before Friday then sure you can let things play out organically and risk losing the UFAs for nothing at this point. The likelihood though is that he won’t be able to make that move before the draft and despite what the standings say, this team doesn’t really pass the eye test for me.

Yesterday’s game left a bitter taste in my mouth despite the win. I dont think they’re good enough as it is to be a playoff worthy team and in this case, I think selling for the right price should be the way to go.

Many have mentioned it before, you don’t have to use all of your picks. If an extra 2nd rounder can be of value in a future trade, either at the draft or next year as our team rounds up and becomes a true playoffs candidate, then you go get that pick and you patiently wait for the right move. I know that kinda sucks and I wanna see playoffs hockey here again, but I’m not convinced this is our time yet.
Last night pretty much showed what our identity is right now and is a headache for KH/JG ,no matter what the players say about not breaking them up you have to make this team better next year .Go for the best if available this summer ,please no more bandaids or projects especially when your coaching staff is a project in itself

Yeah I don't know. I agree it was ugly but 3-0 is the worst score to lose focus on the game. hell, even Washington did it yesterday with Ottawa while being one of the top team in the NHL.

Off course we are far from being a perfect team. We have lots of issues but so do 2/3 of the leagues teams. Our biggest flaw is defensive play. Our D is fragile defensively. We need to stabilize that and imo, it's as important as getting a 2C.

But next season, we will be better with Demidov and Reinbacher coming in. Getting a legit 2C would be absolutely great also. Imaging the boost you give your team by injecting those 3 pieces.

I guess Cozens is the only one who fits age, skating and size wise. Buffalo also has a history of players flourishing when they leave. I wasn't a fan of his hockey IQ, but he doesn't have to be the long term solution at C. O'Reilly would be the best solution short term but he'd be disgruntled playing in a market like Montreal.

I understand the point being made by folks that prefer size. But now, the point would be to get a decent replacement to Evans for cheap, that would keep us in the hunt for the playoffs. After that, if we make the playoffs, anything more than that is ice on the cake.
