How can anyone proclaim this is a bad deal for Florida in the short term - - meaning this season.

Panthers are a legit contender to come out of the East and there’s no question Seth Jones improves their defense.

Maybe in three or four years, that $7M cap hit becomes a problem for Florida, but for THIS YEAR, it’s a huge upgrade for the Panthers.
Haven’t seen anyone make this argument so it’s odd for you to counter it. Of course this is fine this year. But trades are judged on their entire butterfly effect. Not one game, not one series. If Florida wins a cup this year you can probably hand wave any future negatives of the fallout of this trade, but them winning a cup this year isn’t likely. We’ll see.

The bottom line is Florida is now a better team then they were previous to this trade....and they were already a team that was and is a cup favorite....assuming they get Matthew back for the playoffs, they will be a strong favorite to repeat.

People are praising Chicago for their return on Jones. But, does this make them a better team in the long-run? If not, how was that a good return? They also paid two high first round picks to get Jones in the first place.

Chicago gets potentially nothing. A late first round pick 1-2 years from now and a goalie that might be decent.

Chicago needs goaltending for sure. (They foolishly passed on Trey Augustine in favor of Adam Gajan btw). But, Knight is a wildcard.

They also need depth on defense. Was Jones worth 9.5? No. But who else was going to get that money on Chicago’s roster? The guy is playing 24 hard minutes a night. Chicago has nobody to replace him.

This is a HORRIBLE trade for Chicago. Kyle Davidson needs to be ousted this offseason.
I’d like to hear one good decision he has made. He’s been brutal.

He’s a #3/4D now sure, but he’s 30+, declining, and likely to continue to decline. 7M isn’t gonna look pretty in 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030 even with the cap increasing.
What gives you the indication that he’s declining and will be terrible at 33 years old? He was on a poorly run and overall horrible team for several years. In the new cap, $7 million is an extremely manageable cap hit. If they are still competitive, they will have no problem moving that salary if they have to.

Im in Australia and just got back from a day of diving. But I had to jump online to weigh in on the biggest news of the weekend.

John Cena finally turned heel! Wrestlemania is going to be EPIC!

Oh… and the Seth Jones trade is… fine.

No one knows Knight better than the Panthers and they are cutting bait even though Bob is like 38 years old. My money would be on him being a less valuable part of the trade than the 2026 1st

And you'll be proven wrong.

The big turn came in the 2006-2007 season. So yea, in hockey terms we’d call that a pretty good run for the last 18 years.
They weren't good until 2007-08 and were irrelevant by 2021-22. That's 15 years if you're being generous.

And that’s what it’s all going to come down to. You can still expect some great games and dominant performances from Top Dmen playing in bad teams. Look at Mo Seider the last few years. Yet we’ve NEVER seen that from Seth for whatever reasons. He’s still been good but never elite, which we all expected.

We all know the physical talent has always been there, and when he’s been protected and sheltered, he’s been at his best. Not when it’s been asked of him though. And that’s that big question that’s obviously going to get answered over the next few years. Personally, like I said, he has all of the tools to make it happen. I would’ve made the trade from Florida’s perspective. Doesn’t mean he might not struggle in Florida when he’s going to be asked to carry the load starting next season. His best games as a Panther might end up being this year.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

All the ridiculous “ra-ra we got a #1 Dman cheap” or the “thank God he’s gone, he’s horrible” posts from either side are clearly coming from the emotional type fans. He has a lot to prove still, but he’s a very talented player, going into a great situation. Usually that ends up being a successful run for a player.

Jones will never have to carry the load in Florida. Forsling is far better than him, and even if Ekblad isn't re-signed, Mikkola is also an excellent defensive D. Jones is going to the perfect situation for him.

There's certainly risk involved for Florida, but it seems like a pretty tidy piece of business on the surface at least. Really shores up their Top-4D, basically replacing Montour for the time being...and gives them a lot more fallback plan "leverage" if/when it comes down to either getting a team-friendly deal done, or letting Ekblad walk. With a viable replacement in house now. Florida and that system has also been magical in rehabilitating lost souls on the blueline, and Seth Jones isn't even that far gone i don't think...if he's engaged with an actually serious, competitive team.

Getting that retention is big for Florida. Bringing his cap number down to ~$7M isn't really out of line with what is still at least a decent Top-3D and RHD with size to boot. Not with where the cap is about to go and the way salaries are probably about to explode.

But i look at it in some capacity at least, as almost more retention than that, because of the oversized cap allocation to Spencer Knight's contract going the other way as well. I'm not really sure what to make of his ups and downs, but at the core of it...$4.5M was simply too much to be allocating to a backup goaltender who wasn't really anything special, when your clear starter is already on an enormous contract. Could work out alright for Chicago if he gives them stable goaltending, but there's a fairly substantial commitment to a guy who has been pretty up and down...and i'm not sure that Chicago's trainwreck team defence is really the place to thrive for a young, inconsistent goaltender. In any case, i'm sure Florida will be able to replace that roster spot with something decent enough, for a fair bit less cost on the cap...which acts as a bit of a multiplier to the cap savings on Jones in "money in - money out" terms.

For Chicago...i'm not really sure how this makes them a "better team". But it had become pretty clear that at some point, Seth was going to become a detriment or distraction in the locker room. Clearly wasn't happy there, and that can be contagious. Especially when it comes to a big dollar veteran who is going to be looked to for "leadership". So just getting out from that is probably a small "win" even if it doesn't make the team better. To get even a likely late 1st in a year or two, is still not bad even though it's largely for eating a significant cap hit for a bunch more years. Plus there's Knight, and who knows if that works out...but Chicago are at least in a position to find out, and don't really have any other apparent options at the moment.

Jones doesn't seem like a FLA type of player, just not enough grit or intensity or even just defensive prowess. Do they really need this guy?

Yea as a Hawks fan, the board genuinely has despised him for a while and for a reason. Our team actually plays better without him in the lineup (as good as we possibly play with the roster we have). To his core he struggles with decision making all over the ice and is often more of a net negative than you would imagine.

A lot of this just boils down to whether or complacency was what was holding him back and being on a team that holds him more accountable can change that. If not, I think he’s a second pairing on a contender who’s prone to brain farts.

With Floridas core their window really is the next 3 years and good for them for going all in

East is weak

If he turns it around in Florida, he'll look great for us. Just sucks to lose Knight .

Have to respect Zito for trying to get the max out of the core

With all of Barkov/Forlsing/Reinhart/Bennett/Verhaeghe around 30 this gives them a chance at another 2-3 good runs, right now Jones makes a bigger impact than a back up goalie

And they’ll have like 20million in cap space next year to go shopping for another goalie
