U20: Five Nations Tournament in Zug, Switzerland (27-30 August)

Czechia just beat Sweden 5-4 in OT and with that most certainly won the tournament as well. Captain Matej Mastalirsky with a hattrick, including the 3vs3 OT winner. Two more points for Galvas as well who has himself a good tournament playing vs mostly older kids.

Four games in as many days would be a bit much for a kid who only just 17 I guess. At some point you give him a break.
Everybody in the tourney rests at least one game, the Czechia game however is the one he shouldn't have skipped.

Well, hopefully he gets to play center vs Slovakia.

It was between Czechia and Switzerland I guess. I don't think playing 3 in 3 was ever an option for him either.
He's obviously a huge talent but I don't think he's necessarily better than other forwards on that Swedish roster. He has been good but not really dominant. He has two points, a PP assist and a goal that only went in because Switzerland had a horrible goalie in net. I don't think he'd have been the difference today.

Sure he could have been more productive, but I very much disagree on the goal part.

Why? Tim Metzger is a horrible goalie so I'm not surprised he failed to make the save but it was a weak angle shot and not even a particularly good or hard one. Nothing against Frondell but that shouldn't go in. Any half decent goalie is gonna make that save.

Frondell has 0 even strength poins over two games and wasn't really dominant out there. He has two PP points but Sweden converted 2/3 PP's today even without Frondell. I think it's unlikely he'd have been the difference.

One word: deception. NHL goalies let similar goals in, just ask Kuch!

Finlands roster... Could almost call it laughable. Sweden should beat them with 7 or 8 goals. No surprises here mr Hinterman
Turns out that Finland team actually isn't all that bad. After spanking Slovakia yesterday they get another win today vs Switzerland. They can even still win the tournament if they beat Czechia in regulation tomorrow.

Well... Who said Slovakia or the Swiss team was good from the beginning? You? Me? Anyone?
Czechs and- or Sweden should be the team to beat and I don't think they will do that. Of course, let's hope I'm wrong.

Even if Finland are having a weaker period at junior hockey level right now. I believe both you and I understand that this is, or at least should be, far from the best u20 players from Finland.

I believe Finland have more players than usual overseas Halttunen, Veeti, Hemming, Nurmi, Ruohonen, Pieniniemi,Muhonen etc.
And a couple of others in Finland like Kiviharju, Kumpulainen, Saarelainen, Miettinen, Kiiskinen, Alasiurua, Koivu, Soini, Kangas, Rautiainen, Vinni, perhaps even Hynninen etc.
I understand most teams are missing plenty of players but when Finland lacks somewhat depth and honestly are missing like what? All top 4 D's and perhaps top6-9 forwards? Or actually even more quite frankly. Then it's not a reach to not have any expectations on this Finnish roster imho.
My last guess is that at least 80 % of the final roster should be missing from this tournament. With Vali, Suoniemi, Loponen, Uronen and perhaps Rimpinen having a chance of making to the WJC's. That's 1-2 goalies, 1-3 forwards perhaps and not a single D. And out of these I would consider Vali as the only sure bet of taking a spot.

Helenius will probably not even get to participate.

Another good tourney from czechs, especially beating Sweden with any squad always counts.

Sale looked really good, hopefully he will grow more and more from now on and make NHL one day.

Galvas already showing NHL scouts that they are idiots for not drafting him lol.

Jecho also had a nice look agaisnt older guys.

Mastalirsky looked good, wonder how much space he will get with Litvinov in ELH this year.

Whats a bit shame that Benak and Mrtka didnt play at all in the end, if I remember correctly they were in the initial lineup? Maybe I missed some info why they didnt play in the end, idk didnt read much articles around this turney, but still a shame.

Overall we add Jiricek, Badinka, Kos and maybe couple of other guys and might not suck again at the WJC lol.

It's a great time what's happening now for Czech Hockey. Recently we have had some success in all youth tournaments. I think we have definitely bounced off the hockey bottom and we are rising again 👍😂

I think we are so as well.

Not there yet because our NHL pool next season will be weak and our D is still behind at the NHL level.

But this is now several years of successful junior results. 3 good U20's in a row. 2 great Hlinka's in a row. The YOG were exceptional as well. That is everything from 16 to 19 and a lot of players experiencing success in a Czech jersey. Most drafted guys in 15 years. First rounders in 3 straight drafts (Mrtka looking likely this year).

Sale ended with about 7 points in 4 games I think. He had a hell of a tourney! Now continue that into the season and enter U20 as a guy to fear!

Jecho got some offense as well and that is great to see!

I know the tournaments don't carry much weight going forward. I don't think this means much at all. It is nice though to see some guys playing well.
