Close to having Nash and Stamkos

Spezza was close to be 1st overall

Will McDavid come home when his contract is up to make it another one?
I don't think Stamkos was that serious about leaving Tampa Bay and I know there was talk about the Leafs being interested in Nash when he wanted Columbus to trade him, however were they serious contenders?

I guess will have to wait for McDavid when he becomes a UFA. ;)

Actually it's 8 players on the roster who were drafted in the top 10.

1. Matthews (1st overall)
2. Tavares (1st overall)
3. Thornton (1st overall)
4. Spezza (2nd overall)
5. Bogosian (3rd overall)
6. Marner (4th overall)
7. Rielly (5th overall)
8. Nylander (8th overall)

The 03 04 team had 7 or 8 top 10 I think.
Edit was 9

Sundin
Nolan
Leetch
Antropov
Berg
Jackman
Francis
Kilger
Berehowsky

That's a pretty sad list

I was also looking up who those players were so you saved me some time.

The only ones who I knew right away was Sundin and Nolan since they were 1st overall.

I also can not believe how Berg was a 3rd overall pick and I never knew Jackman was a 5th overall pick.

There were a bunch more in the 11-20 range

Oh really. What years were the habs? I know it's a while ago, I'm only in my 20's but thinking back i can't remember any first overall.
No these were way back when I was a kid ... ancient history for u guys ... Monahan, Plasse, Houle, Guy and Wickenheiser ... Habs used to have a GM whose strategy was to trade old vets near end for picks ... but 4 of those guys turned into good players and 1 of course Guy was guy when u go to a Habs game in Mtl u still hear "Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy" from rafters ... they sing it out ... I remember 1st time I felt it in old Forum it felt like whole place was shaking ... he was main man from those Habs teams in 70s people thought were best hockey teams ever assembled

The Leafs also had a deal in place for Vincent Lecavalier in the early 2000s.
They actually almost traded for him on two different times.

The First time was in 2001 when they would have traded Kaberle, and Antropov for Lecavalier. The deal was agreed to and a trade call was being set up with the NHL to make it official. However the Lightning owner at the time overruled Rick Dudley and vetoed the trade.

When Vinny Lecavalier was nearly traded to the Maple Leafs

Technically the second time was before the 2013 draft where the Leafs would trade for him, use a compliance buyout and in doing so they would get the 3rd overall pick from the Lightning.

Nice one.

Another almost Leaf was Ed Jovanovski. I think it was around 2011 or so when he hit UFA status and Brian Burke was outbid by an extra year by the Arizona Coyotes.
